OK... so I looked everywhere and I cant find the place where I can set a specific ringtone to a contact.

Shouldn't this action be available on the contacts app?

Well, I do it from the music player. Open the file you want to use as a ringtone in the music player, then hit menu button, the hit set as, and a menu pops up with several choices of voice call, video call, caller and alarm. Just pick caller and then your contacts list opens up.

I don't know if that's the only way, but it's a way to do it.

I use Google Contacts exclusively and had the same problem. Turns out you need to create a contact on the "phone" (just the name is enough) and link it with the google contact version - then you can set a ringtone on the "phone" version of the contact.

Ah ok, so that's the problem. All my contacts are gmail contacts.

All of my contacts are Google Contacts synced down to the phone. I never create a contact on the phone. I can install custom ringtones with the music player as described above.

I use Google Contacts exclusively and the contact list that pops up after selecting "Set As" and "Caller" is empty. When I create a phone contact with the same name, and link it to the appropriate Google Contact, it shows up in that list.

Yes, It's possible to do like you say. But I wanted to set the ringtone in the "normal" way.

That option only is available if is a phone contact, like miker71 said.
