Guest fuzio1963 Posted July 22, 2010 Report Posted July 22, 2010 R 23, and R22.1 are really great Roms. But, why oh why, NOBODY can make BT to work?? Or, at least, where HTC Sense widgets can be found, so they can be used with Nexus One?
Guest Posted July 22, 2010 Report Posted July 22, 2010 I realize the threads are super long so you might have missed the info... But a lot of the Desire stuff has hooks in the kernel, yet that kernel works on the Desire and not the N1. So source must be obtained, or the N1 kernels must be hacked, to get those hooks working so that BT, FM radio, etc, work properly. Source was released some time ago, it has given hope but at the same time there were a lot of projects/new releases going on, and now there's the Desire 2.2 ROMs coming out (the source was released for 2.1, so who knows how well it will help for the 2.2 port).. so.. again.. we must wait and hope it'll all be figured out soon!

Yeah, i know. Source was released way long ago, that is why i was wondering.........why to leave something "un-finished"??? I know, there were alot of new things, like Froyo, etc., but i bet there are hundreds of us, who would rather use COMPLETED Desire Port rom, than another bunch of newer roms, also "broken". Like i said, r23 is great.......but look at the posts.....dozens of things do NOT work! I know, this is called "development", and i know meaning of it. But, hey!!!!! Since the source has been released, we have been given some promises..................Don't get me wrong..........sometime ago i have donated, but now i just feel like "been cheated on". That is just not fair, i think.
Guest Posted July 22, 2010 Report Posted July 22, 2010 Source isn'g magical either - look at all the companies that went "opensourced" then "bankrupt" lol. It takes time to understand, adapt it, make it work, etc.. Maybe it's not possible for a one-man team? Who knows. It's just unrealistic to expect progress daily like that.. Do you know how many million lines of code are in a typical Linux kernel source tree? Imagine all the small modifications here and there made by HTC for their own phones? Imagine how long it can take to understand it all? Have some empathy lol... Heck it took Netscape YEARS before open-sourcing their web browser even paid off.. and it paid off for the browser not for Netscape Inc lol. Just as an example. So, as users of this, there's 2 things we can do: wait, submit bug reports --- or go to another ROM that actually has the features we want. Or if you have kernel hacking instincts or want to get your hands dirty, you can join in the fun.. that's how the r23 got the FM Radio support, thanks to InsectRaven (or whatever's his nickname) work to integrate the hooks in the kernel for that. I don't know how you can feel cheated after all this. These weren't electoral promises, no contract was signed, just hope given and excitement after the source release. In the end though, that's all it was, and the real hard work has to be done by people, people who have lives, enjoy summer, can't do everything at once, and sometimes even need help... And in the world of Free Software/Open Source Software, nobody is cheated as long as EVERYONE who wants something helps in some way. Be it donations/bounties to get the work done (no the ad-free/plus accounts are not donations/bounties to get the DEsire port 100% working), legal support, documentation, bug reports, helping people on day-to-day issues, coding, testing, etc... And this is why all the whiners are so annoying - they are doing nothing BUT whining, are not contributing in ANY way. How can they DEMAND anything if they are not contributing? Maybe is someone or a group can donate Paul £1000 to complete the Desire port he'd work full-time on it for 2 weeks? But.. who's gonna do that? And Paul never agreed/announced to this so don't start quoting me that he said that lol sns.

Maybe it is just one of "those days" I am having today? :D Like you said: hope was given.......I really appreciate his (Paul) work, I really do, but when I tried today r23, then I had to get back to a different rom, I just did it with heartache. Well, wait is the only option, since I am not "as smart as he is", with programming that is. But, thank you for your kindness replies.
Guest wdfowty Posted July 22, 2010 Report Posted July 22, 2010 Look at it from Paul's side of the equation...A full-time job, kids, real life come first, Android hacking comes second. When Paul comes online, and he checks the boards just to see a bunch of complaining romz kiddies begging for ETA's...Think of how insulting that must feel. If I were him, I wouldn't put up with it. Just goes to show how devoted he is to all this. Don't mean to offend, just cluing you in  Anyways, back on subject, from what I have learned, the Desire uses a custom BT stack that enables all the goodies like FM radio, etc. Even with the kernel source released, there is still reverse engineering involved to sort out the stack. I personally never use BT, so it doesn't make much of a difference to me. I'm just happy to have a r23 rom without an Ad-Free account :D. It'll all get sorted out in time.
