Rooting a htc hero locked to 3

Hey,

I'm gonna root my hero cause 3 seem to be a. useless shower of b@stards getting this new update out....

I've not seen any mention of the 3 versions on the rooting guides... does that mean that they don't need to be downgraded?

Also what would be the best Rom? Looking at making my phone run a bit smoother and multitasking better...

Would maybe like a different UI if you can get them... depending what its like... although I'm guessing the only difference really is the no. Of screens...

Should I just try following the guide and see what happens... what can I do if it doesn't l work?

I noticed a 3 specific ROM on the official radio page. After rooting the phone I've been able to install a variety of OSes, so can't imagine you'd have any problems changing your first choice! I've been using the kitchen version of Paul's ROM on Orange without issues (apart from the system clock not updating in top bar - widget clocks are fine).

The whole process was exceedingly quick and easy :(

also... can i extend the number of screens for the standard andriod os.... don't think i like sense anymore....

1. The 'kitchen' which people refer to is the online kitchen that you can COOK your own version of Pauls ROM.

You need to sign up to be able to use this facility. You see how my details are different colour to yours? Thats because i signed up (modaco+ or smth like that). I think it cost £4.99, and worth it, like sheryl cole says :(

The advantage of this, is well invaluable, you can make your own version of Pauls excellent work.

2. To get more screens in Android, u need to be using a 2.1 ROM (if you managed to get it ROOTED). Then download LauncherPro from the market, it looks like stock GUI, but it adds a hell of a lot more features and gives u the option to add upto 7 home screens like Sense.

Sense is rubbish now, i used to love it, but now its just boring.

I dont even have my HTC anymore, but i still help out when i can

i'm ripping what little hair i have left out.... wtf is going on??!?!???!?!?!?

the ruu thing gave the error 171 after it rebooted the phonetothe white screen...

You need to follow the Goldcard method. It's a bit more effort but it works for the 3-branded Hero.

(Annoyingly I can't find the guide I used)

I have the image on my SD card... connect it up to the pc and what normally happens is when I run the ruu exe file it gets to the bit where it reboots to the white screen on the phone and I either get error 170 or 171 if it gets a bit further.... i'm away from home atm so will probs have another go starting.g with renaming. the gold card.... in fact... I was using v 0.0.5 I think...

would it make A difference if what version I use???

I literally did a 3 one this weekend and what a pilarva! Windows 7 does not make it easy either, hasent to say I'm wondering why I ever left XP ...

Get to the point where you've got RUU USB, then reinstall the vista (yes vista) based drivers ... Then try again, should work. Once completed you then need to remove Sync and the drivers and reinstall when the phones in normal mode again otherwise youll loose mass storage ability.

It's a ball ache to be sure but it works.

No, dont use 7 drivers untill your rooting is done. Take everything off, then reinstall with vista drivers. Then go through the process untill you get stuck at RUU USB again, then once again, remove and reinstall drivers, reboot pc and phone when done, then go through the downgrade (If using the gold card method). It should go through fine.

Once completed you will however loose the ability to use mass storage, your phone will do it, but your PC wont know what to do, so once again strip Sync and drivers off your PC, then reinstall with your phone in normal mode.

I'm using launcher pro which is ok but fairly slow running.... didn't keep sense for long so not sure how that runs now but sits at around 91mb free ram in taskiller where as with base android it was sat at 115mb... not sure how much of a difference it makes...

also keep geting com.htc.bgs(??).com failures... anyone know what they are... not 100% on the name now but will post it when it comes up!

I can also confirm that you can Root your phone on 3 Networks. I just did it a few days ago. Mine was a 3 Branded HTC Hero in white.... the phone is locked with there latest update 1.5 android FW. I had the same problems as you ie cannot use the recovery flasher.

After hours of trial testing and research i finally did it. But i cannot remember which guide i used...(i'll take time to find it for you).

But the method goes something like this.

Gold Card Method. Download some tools and Generic HTC Hero Rom. Use SD Micro Card and format into Fat32. Go into a website to get code for Gold Card. Code send to E-mail. Retrieve Code execute into the tool app. (I guess this installs the recovery Img). Then DL HTC sync (Latest Ver). Then Run the RUU recovery system with phone connected on.

After that it was rooted. Then just DL any Update.zip rom and put on the root directory on SD Card and Reboot phone while holding Home button during power up. Select install update.zip from SD card.

This is a very simplified guide of what is involve to root. A more detail guide is available ...which i will hopefully find. One final note, i was using WinXP.
