What do I do now? (Rooted HTC Hero)

I just rooted my HTC Hero this morning, so now it's running Firmware 2.1-update 1 and Software number 2.27.651.5

I did it because I heard about all the cool stuff you could do with a rooted phone, but I have no idea how to do any of it, or what any of the terminology means.

Even when I look through the Absolute Beginners board, I still can't grasp most of this. Like, what is a ROM, and what does it do, and how do I get it on my phone, why do i need it? There's so many questions.

Is there a way someone can explain all of this stuff to me in an easy to understand way?
