Somebody with Froyo JP2 and root and ROM Manager ...

I'm guessing you could use root + ROM Manager to export the Froyo ROM, so people (like me) without easy access to Windows + Odin could flash using ROM Manager?

Or, is it not that simple? (Modem firmware .. still need Windows + Odin for that?)

Like I say, just guessing. But I'm getting wafts of sweet Froyo, and I want a taste :(

I believe a ROM must be specifically written to be flashed through Recovery (ROM Mgr). The stuff that's coming out in Odin format would need to be ported to an update.zip type format to work. I don't know what that involves though.

You only need to open the zip file on the stuff for Odin to see that it's not the same thing. There's a reason Paul's stated that r3 of MCR will be the last Odin method for his ROMs, and that future ones will be in another format.

yeah but one could make a backup of a fresh jg2 install in the recovery and this would be easily restoreable on another device!

edit: odin works well with virtualbox (full) ... i am a non windoze (linux) user myself ...

I tried getting Windows in VMWare Fusion to see the SGS, no luck so far. Last resort is Boot Camp but it seems kind of overkill ...

We've got a thread discussing that. Looks like Mac users still an issue, but I haven't tried virtualbox yet.

That happened to me. Fix was to delete the update.zip, then re-run backup from ROM Mgr. Worked like a charm after that.

Okay, so after re-reading your post and thinking about it, is this what you're suggesting?

Someone do a fresh & clean install of FroYo, then run a nandroid backup and distribute that backup for others to use as a restore for their own phone?

I guess that would work, assuming nandroid restore doesn't look at the serial number on the device and stop you from doing it.

Another obvious issue is privacy for whoever makes the original backup. They'd have to make sure they have a truly clean install that has none of their personal information, accounts, phone numbers, etc, etc on the device, otherwise they'd be posting it for the world to copy/steal.

Just thinking out-loud here.

If i remeber currect they did this on the Vibrant forum on XDA, making a nandroid image of the stock firmware and it didn't seem to give any problems.

Yes, the privacy issue is a concern - you'd have to do the backup after a factory reset I suppose, then re-install ROM Manager/Nandroid as needed from APK (not by signing into the Market) and then backup to SD.

I do know that after any SIM swap you have to re-sign into your google account so there is at least some forethought from google, but of course that doesn't protect anything locally on the phone. But if it's factory fresh, that shouldn't be an issue.

Got Clockwork Recovery to boot on JP2 (Froyo) but next problem is it can't mount /sdcard so can't make a nandroid backup atm

So I finally gave in and installed Boot Camp etc.

not yet root, just playing around and testing stuff.

Yeah, Froyo, yeah! (I like it so far, and so far it looks like I'll be able to use it as my everyday ROM)

Yep i did the same a while back so i could play games on my imac .... its very straight forward and certainly came in handy to flash galaxy s with odin :(

CWM cannot work with jp3 firmware. and it even messes up with your phone function. I just can't call out anymore until i did a factory reset. u still can get root, but please don't even think of using CWM on this JP3.
