Can't enter recovery to do backup on Modaco r3.1

I recently rooted my Desire initially as a way of removing all the Orange installed horribleness. With that done I then installed Modaco custom rom r3.1 so I could use A2SD+.

With Froyo 2.2 about to hit, I'm now wondering about backing up my current ROM. I've followed the original guide I used when rooting, but when I enter recovery mode I'm still getting the default HTC red (!) screen. I was expecting that as I've installed a custom rom I'd get the option to backup to my SD. Can anyone please point me in the right direction?

Software info confirms my baseband version is 32.36.00.28U_4.06.00.02_2 and Modcao custom ROM is installed.
