HTC unlock @ OTA updates

If I unlock my Vodafone HTC Desire, will I start to receive generic OTA updates? Of will I still have to wait for Vodafone's own, tested, updates?

Been wondering this for a while now. Not sure how it all works.

I'd guess the update address is part of the rom. And so would it need to be unlocked, then flashed manually with a stock rom before it would start to lookup generic OTA's?

Anyone have any better ideas?
