Guest cyrilthefish Posted February 6, 2003 Report Posted February 6, 2003 just wondering, what sort of mobiles did people own before getting an SPV? mine was: BT/phillips pre-pay thing virgin/alcatel pre-pay mobile (huge but a nuts battery life of 7+days) one2one/siemens C35i (first contract phone) only chose this because it wasn't a nokia 3210! ;) one2one/siemens SL45 - the best phone i've owned, was way ahead of it's time! i upgraded the firmware to support java a year before any other phone supported it! orange/SPV - without doubt the best featured phone out there! just needs a few niggles such as the more major bugs and the app-signing thing to be sorted out
Guest Monolithix [MVP] Posted February 6, 2003 Report Posted February 6, 2003 As per 90% (or at least thats what it feels like) of the board i had a Sony J70e, unlocked and with a PAYG Cellnet SIM. Before that aages ago i had a Siemens C35i, that was a really good phone, earpiece died on me though just before i got round to replacing it :/
Guest bobroberts Posted February 6, 2003 Report Posted February 6, 2003 Nokia Orange (2110 I think) - Great Solid Phone with amazing reception  Nokia 3210 - The first predictive text messaging and turned the mobile market upside down (on orange) :!: Nokia 6210 - should have been a great phone, nice (if slightly bland) styling but good feature set but the phone balance in you hand feels slightly top heavy. :? Amazing battery life - 10 days standby!!! Unfortunatly I kept sending these back to orange as it seemed unable to hold onto a call. went through 4 all in all. :D still got one now which I'm trying to convince my girlfriend that she needs to use instead of her 3310. That way she can IR modem for work email on the train. ;) Sony CMD-Z7 - bit of a double edged sword this (like the SPV). loads of features but far too many quirks. and the ringtones eurgh!!! :x couple this with the only software to sync to the computer costs £45 from sony and even then you have to pay another £25 for a blinking lead!!! AND WORSE STILL it arrived a year after release!!! Was never really convinced by the jog dial (something sony puts on everything these days!!!) It just meant that you couldn't operate it properly with one hand Orange SPV - well i'll give it time... good but with quirks... and the battery life... bobroberts
Guest Firaas Posted February 6, 2003 Report Posted February 6, 2003 Ericsson all the way! Ericsson T18 - one2one Ericsson T28 - one2one/T-Mobile Ericsson T39 - T-Mobile Orange SPV - Orange The Ericsson's were all small in comparison to other phones at the time of purchase, but the software on the T28/T39 was horrendously slow. T18 had loads of quality problems, including one which loosened a speaker connection upon vibrate, and made the phone useless.
Guest shadieb Posted February 6, 2003 Report Posted February 6, 2003 In order of when I very first got a mobile :- Motorola Flair One2One about 6 years ago. Alcatel (can't remember the model, was silver coloured and v.good) on Vodaphone approx 5 years ago. Nokia 3110 on Vodaphone approx 3 years ago. Trium Wap phone on BT Cellnet approx 18 months ago. Sagem Myx-5 on T-Mobile 6 months ago. Now the glorious SPV on Orange for the last few weeks ;)

Guest lutzh Posted February 6, 2003 Report Posted February 6, 2003 Oh wow... I hope I get it in right historical order: Nokia 1011 (I guess it was 1991 or 1992!), Nokia 2110, Motorola StarTAC 85, Motorola V 3688, Nokia 7110, Nokia 6210, Motorola V 60, XDA, Motorola V 70, Nokia 6310i (still have it), SPV... Cheers, Lutz
Guest MaximilianWeisheit Posted February 6, 2003 Report Posted February 6, 2003 Panasonic ??? since 96 first cell, back then minute prices where so high ,-))) Nokia 8810 since 98 for the fun of it for one year Nokia 8890 since 2000 gave me good services in Europe and United States SPV since 2003 - little bit faster and better reception and i love it even more!

Guest Lojt Posted February 6, 2003 Report Posted February 6, 2003 Phillips Diga :| Nokia 5110 Siemens M35i Nokia 3330 SPV ;)
Guest BAMN Posted February 6, 2003 Report Posted February 6, 2003 nokia 3110 nokia 6110 nokia 7110 nokia 8810 motorola V50 motorola V60 motorola V70 errrrrrr Ericsson t39 Ericsson T68 Ericsson T68i Panasonic GD87 Siemmens SL45 I know there is more but i just cant remember them!
Guest Chic0 Posted February 6, 2003 Report Posted February 6, 2003 Motorola d170 Nokia 6110 Nokia 3210 Nokia 6110 Nokia 8210 Nokia 6210 Sony J5e (big mistake) Orange SPV Out of all those my favourite was the Nokia 6110. Never went wrong on me once. Athough it isnt the best phone of all time, it was the best in my eyes for when it was out.Couldnt fault the functionality and reliability.
Guest Shaks Posted February 6, 2003 Report Posted February 6, 2003 let's see Philips Diga Brick for 2months (Cellnet Pay&Go) Motorola c520 for 6 months (Orange Pay&GO) Nokia 6150e for 6 months (Orange Pay &Go) bought offline Nokia 702 for 1 year (orange version of 6110) bought offline for my orange pay & go sim after I sold my 6150 (I had this phone whilst I was using the 8810 and 8210 on cellnet as well as I needed to keep my orange pay & go number and couldn't transfer pay & go numbers at the time. Nokia 8810 for 4 months (chrome, precurser to 8850) Cellnet contract. Phone was best looking but most problematic phone ever, much worse than SPV. Was replaced by Cellnet by 8210 under insurance as 8810 became obsolete. Nokia 8210 for 1 year (replacement for 8810) Nokia 7110e for 1 year (moved to Orange contract, transferred cellnet number and discarded orange pay & go nok702) Nokia 6210e for 16 months (Orange upgrade from 7110) ORANGE SPV current (Upgrade from 6210e) My last 4 nokia's I wasn't too happy with as there were many problems with them but I'd persevere and make good use of my orange care and nokia service centres. The nokia 8810 must be the most unreliable phone ever built. They were very expensive but would switch off automatically and had horrendous reception and many other problems. The best nokia I used has gotta be the 6150e (orange dual band version of 6110) least problems with this phone. I think that's all of them but not 100% sure Shaks
Guest TooMuch2AM Posted February 6, 2003 Report Posted February 6, 2003 Ahh let's see! All phones on contract with Cellnet, Voda and Orange... - NEC G9 (brick) - Ericsson GA688 (years ahead of its time) - Sharp MC-G1 (the FIRST smartphone - see http://theapplecollection.com/design/phone/Sharp.html) - Ericsson T10 (crap) - Motorola T2288 (used for WAP dev purposes only, crap phone) - Ericsson T18 (wicked, if ugly) - Ericsson T28 (nice phone, bit flimsy) - Nokia 8210 (out of a cracker) - Sony CMD-Z5 (stylish, short on features) - Ericsson T68 (nice, but flawed) - Orange SPV (the jury's out!) So there you go - makes me cringe to think how much I've spent!
Guest yatpeak Posted February 6, 2003 Report Posted February 6, 2003 nokia 3110 nokia 6110 nokia 7110 nokia 8810 motorola V50 motorola V60 motorola V70 errrrrrr Ericsson t39 Ericsson T68 Ericsson T68i Panasonic GD87 Siemmens SL45 I know there is more but i just cant remember them! Wow! Considering you're only twenty, you must have some sort of obsession with phones. ;) Wyatt
Guest Chris b.a.r.f. Posted February 6, 2003 Report Posted February 6, 2003 There seems to be a N7110 trend here - cracking phone it was, too. Last decent Nokia?
Guest exodus842 Posted February 6, 2003 Report Posted February 6, 2003 Panasonic G450 (first phone, going back 4 or 5 years) Nokia 5110 Nokia 3310 (on cellnet, hated cellnet and phone so much sold within 2 months lol) Sony J5 Ericsson T68 Ericsson T68i SPV!!
Guest yzbob Posted February 6, 2003 Report Posted February 6, 2003 philips, cellnet, payg brick thing! free with barclay student card ;) (huge and ugly but indestructable ) t18 - i liked this but the speaker packed in, still works occasionally. nokia 6210 nokia 6210 nokia 6210 nokia 6210 did this phone last more than 2 months without the signal disappearing? apart from that it was pretty good. t68i - liked this but canceled my contract and sold it for £170 on ebay. got my spv for £10 same contract even ported the number over. actually made over £80 profit by getting the spv  what a bargin!!! spv - excellent, well worth the +£80
Guest Pidder Posted February 6, 2003 Report Posted February 6, 2003 Damn s*** - you guys bought lots of phones!!! The SPV is only my second (2nd!) phone! My 7110 pleased me for three (3!) years!
Guest TooMuch2AM Posted February 6, 2003 Report Posted February 6, 2003 Ahh but Pidder! My phone collection spans about 9 years, and several career moves involving mobile development of some sort. I think I'm doing quite well at just over 1 phone a year! ;) Most innovative phone I've owned had to be the MC-G1 (see above) it was the original smartphone, shame it never took off. Now don't get me started on PDA's!
Guest Chris b.a.r.f. Posted February 6, 2003 Report Posted February 6, 2003 Most innovative phone I've owned had to be the MC-G1 (see above) it was the original smartphone, shame it never took off. Weird phone, looks like a sort of proto-R380...never seen one before.
Guest TooMuch2AM Posted February 6, 2003 Report Posted February 6, 2003 The MC-G1 was amazing for the time - Full POP3 email, organiser functions, multicast SMS and rotating screen for calendar view etc. It was largely marketed in Europe by Alcatel, and it was pretty much a proof of concept phone that escaped the R&D labs. I always associate it with the Apple Newton, another breakthrough product that was the father of all modern PDA's. I ended up selling the MC-G1 to a guy in Italy for twice what I paid for it - go figure! :?
Guest DamianJauregui Posted February 6, 2003 Report Posted February 6, 2003 Okay, here we go... Analogue handsets [with/without ETACS]: --------------------------- Mobira VT1 [Vodafone branded] Storno 220 [white version of the 8000S] Motorola 8000S Motorola 4800X Mobira Cityman Motorola 8500X Motorola 9800X NEC 9A NEC 11A Cleartone 9000 Nokia Cityman 1320 [first phone after Nokia bought out Mobira] Nokia 110 Nokia 130 NEC 9D Mitsubishi MT4 Mitsubishi MT6 Panasonic D10 Sony MarsBar phone [CM333 I think?] Toyacom K2 [played Fur Elise on hold!] Panasonc F-something --------------------------- On to GSM handsets now: --------------------------- Motorola 8800X [solid] Motorola MicroTAC [several] Motorola Flair Motorola StarTAC [several] Philips Fizz [gift] Nokia 1320 [i think, or 3120 - had several of these] Mitsubish Trium [mistake] Motorola CD930 [baaaad, very baaaad!] Motorola Timeport [with WAP] Motorola V phone Motorola V phone [uS version with WAP] Motorola Timeport [second one - with WAP again] Samsung [some weird US thing with WAP] Nextel [had for three days and lost it! horrible device] Motorola V100 [cute, but headset kept breaking] Nokia 7110 [only two weeks old when it fell in the toilet] Nokia 3310 Siemens C35i Nokia 3330 Ericsson T39i Ericsson T66 Nokia 6210 Motorola Timeport [again] Nokia 8310 [current] --------------------------- And finally the Orange SPV [just bought it]. In case you haven't noticed, I'm a bit of a mobile collector. My dad used to have a shop in the mid eighties when they first came out and I've been using them since, I'm sure that there's loads of handsets I've missed off this list, but these were the ones I remember... Most of the Motorola handsets were from when I worked for Motorola doing web/WAP development.
