Rooted Orange Desire Running Froyo - Radio?

i'm suffering from a phone crash if i try and start the camcorder/camera - it's been suggested that it's a radio version issue??

I'm on Orange so I know the Desire is temperamental with the Radio Version - why is this? If I update the radio why do I have to buy an unlock code - with the updated radio version after unlocking I presume everything works as expected?
