2G/3G Switch for Froyo?

For some reason I believe that it's possible to programmatically switch between 2G and 3G networks on Froyo (I think I saw this option as available in JuiceDefender).

2.1 widgets only displayed the networks config screen - are there any widgets for Froyo which do the switch directly?

There was a 2.1 widget that turns on/off Mobile date - that means 2G - 3G.

Widget looks slightly different but is there in 2.2 also.

Menu>Settings>Wireless & networks>Mobile network>Network Mode set it to GSM only, believe that sets it to 2G only or Edge or something.

Edit: Oh nvm, your looking for a widget, hmm got no clue then.

Huh? No it doesn't :), that simply turns data on or off regardless of the network mode you're using.

Essentially I want a switch to toggle between GSM (2G) only and GSM/WCDMA (3G). This has nothing to do with data.

I think he means a switch from 2g to 3g and vice versa. The mobile data one switches off both 2g and 3g.

buy extended controls: the best...

http://www.appbrain.com/app/com.extendedcontrols

Extended controls takes you to the menu in settings, not changes with one click, wich is i think is required here. I read somewhere that is not possible because of some limitations of android itself, at least in official ROM's

I understand this was the case in 2.1, but I'm pretty sure JuiceDefender can switch between 2G and 3G in Froyo. I'll install it at some point to find out.

I wanna push this topic a bit.

I am desperatly searching for a tool which switches automaticly between 2g and 3g, for battery-saving reasons (got 33% network-standby in battery statistic). There is a big potential hidden in switching off 3g, when not used.

There is a tool, but only for cyanogen-mod.

Any improvements on the current situation would be great :)

This is indeed a very important feature. For those having 2G/3G connections, like in HK, we can definitely make use of such features for battery saving purpose. Say, use 2G for background sync/MSN, and switch to 3G in case of web browsing/market/map.

I would like to see an app/widget that call up a small window, with 3 options: 2G / 3G / Off. (if select off, it only turns off DATA, while cell network remains as last selection!)

Switching manually is not an option for me. I want to use my phone without constantly looking into a task manager, or switching beetween wireless modes or stuff like that. Sry to say, but Apple has a point on that one ... the phone should support me and not the other way round.

The Cyanogen-Tool switches 3G off, if the phone is in standbymode (screen off), which is already 80% of the work. The remaining potential is quite minor, as frequent switching between 2G and 3G when the screen is on and i work with my phone might not save battery at all. (how much energy is needed to toggle between 2g and 3g?)

This is a feature of the Power Control Widget in Cyanogenmod 6 (nightlies)

You can customise which toggles you want, one of which is a 2g-3g switch and there is also a Mobile Data toggle.

You can set it so that when the Data is switched off, 3g is automatically disabled, and automatically enabled when you switch it back on. This is all done by the widget, it's not just a link to the settings.

I would highly recommend CM6 for battery life, I get <1% drain per hour on standby, and it is very fast, so if you're not partial to Sense UI, CM6 is the way to go.

Any news about this issue?

A checkbox "2G only in Standby" in the kitchen would be great!

Some short Info: I'm running on MoDaCo R8 and I was able to install and make the CM6 "Toggle 2G" app running. It works perfectly.

I have build my ROM with Paul's kitchen. That seems to be important, because I have been told by others running MCR8 too that it did not work. I just copied the file to my SD Card and installed it with Astro.

I am also on R8 (build on kitchen) but cannot install the tool. I thought maybe creating an update.zip would help, but not sure how this would look like with the APL inside....

What's the name of the apk file? I'm browsing the CM6 zip but can't seem to find the power control widget apk...

That's strange. I cannot understand why I was able to install Toggle 2G/3G then.

But wait: I disabled signature checking in clockwork (which stays of once disabled). To my knowledge, it checks the checks if every file's hash in the update.zip matches a global hash which is also signed by an RSA key.

Maybe, just maybe, disabling signature checking also magically influences signature checking on installing APKs.

The reason behind Toggle 2G/3G needs an AOSP FroYo (or be atleast signed with the necessary keys) is, it has to run in the same DalvikVM as the core-apps (userid:0) are. But those apps are signed with HTC's (private) keys. If you app wasn't signed with those keys (which are not available to us), they can't run in the same VM and therefore aren't getting installed. Maybe with sig-checking disable this app-signature check is also disabled.

At least I'm able to run Toggle 2G/3G 0.0.10 on my Online-Kitchen-Build MoDaCo R8.

My ROM:

My only modifications to that ROM are Disable Perflock, removing useless HTC Apps (Stocks,Flashlight,App Sharing,Calculator,Footprints,PDF Viewer,Teeter) and all selectable HTC Widgets in the kitchen. I also added Addfree, ASE + Scripts and removed Wavesecur & WiFi Status Indicator. Bootanimation is the Nexus One's and I have enabled Trackpad + Power for wake. Advanced 802.11N (wifi enabled in sleep) got enabled. Same for A2SD+, Disable vibrate on shutdown, OpenVPN and Disable perflock. I deselected the Radio and installed the latest one from 08/31/2010 found at XDA's.

Lateron I installed the interactive & powersave governors, undervolt kernel module, CFQ scheduler and the latest RIL update. But that was after I installed Toggle 2G/3G.

I don't understand any of the above, but I installed from market, rebooted and it all worked fine. I have sig checking off in CWM. Very happy actually! THe widget is brilliant on its own, I'll check out the autoswitch options later.

Yep, just installed on my custom built kitchen rom R8 and all is working. Finally a direct 3g/2g switch that actually works, some great features as well. Use the signed install as the unsigned would not work.

Thanks
