Can font size / background colour be changed?

Just got my first android phone - GT540 optimus - for my wife and the first thing I noticed being a bit older than a teenager is that teh default font size for icons / menu text / sms messages etc is very small - at least for my eyes! I do not need to wear glasses for normal day to day readig / computer use - at least not yet !

Also it would appear that it is not possible to change the white text on black background look and feel (theme)

I would much prefer a normal paer type white blackground with black text - and user defined fonts / font size ala my BlackBerry 9700

Can any of the above be done in default android OS?
