Guest CharlieBareham Posted August 5, 2010 Report Posted August 5, 2010 So, three weeks ago I posed a picture where I had smashed the screen on my Streak and how it took O2 three weeks to replace which is entirely against there insurance policy of next day replacement. Well, at work last night, went to slide it into my pocket and it slid out (I have deep pockets, I guess the headphone jack got caught) and it fell only about two feet and the screen shattered. This is getting ridiculous. Does anyone know if O2 have a limit on the number of claims you can make? Charlie.
Guest bidi_123 Posted August 5, 2010 Report Posted August 5, 2010 Hiya Mate I believe that you can claim a maximum three times in a year, but you need to be careful as they pass the info onto other insurance companies so the more you claim the higher the insurance will be i.e. home insurance not sure if its entirely true but that is what i was told at an o2 store

Guest Phylar Posted August 5, 2010 Report Posted August 5, 2010 I really don't know how you guys can crack your screens so much. Yeah 2 feet seems like a short fall, but man twice already? I only had a little rubber cover on my iPhone 3GS and I don't have a single scratch on the glass after 2 years (no screen protector either). I've been using my iPhone 4 (in the US, waiting...) for a month, treating it very very carefully as it has 2 panes of glass, and still no scratch or dent. I'm not saying Apple vs Dell hoola (I've heard reports of iPhone 4's falling a couple feet and cracking), but I think there's a fair amount of "user error" when it comes to phones. Seems like you need a good full sized case honestly.
Guest CharlieBareham Posted August 6, 2010 Report Posted August 6, 2010 The first time I forgot I had it in my pocket, jumped a ramp on my bike and fell on it, the headphone in my pocket rammed into it, cracking the LCD panel underneath the glass. The second time I was listening to music at work, went to slide it into my pocket and the headphone jack caught onto my trouser pocket, I had thought it had slid in and I let go, dropping it straight onto the corner.

Sounds like the problem here is the headphones :)
Guest hobochangba Posted August 6, 2010 Report Posted August 6, 2010 You know what they say.... ....The bigger they are the harder they fall

Guest MrPokeylope Posted August 7, 2010 Report Posted August 7, 2010 Fixed! :) My streak did a flip 8 feet in the air onto tiles tonight. total damage... small fleck of paint off of battery back. The device smacked hard on its side and battery and back flew off. it's as resilient as my iphone 3g was. Not keen on posts such as these making the device sound flimsy. The only downside to the streak is dells lack of design. Adw fixes that tho.

I've dropped my Streak more times then i can count from about 5'5" high a few times onto concretes >_<! a few times onto carpet and once onto tiles, Total damage = a small pit of paint off the battery cover to :).. I don't get how people manage to break these... all the times this happened to me.. wasn't in a case or anything o.0... Strange :/

Strange :/ I have a feeling, and it is only a feeling, that Dell may have run out of Gorilla glass during manufacturing so they started to just use normal glass. It seems some people have had theirs longer and done much worse to it without even a scratch (including me, my first one the under panel smashed, the front glass stayed perfect) and then others (again, like me) who just seems to shatter and scratch with ridiculous amount of ease. Just a thought.
Guest popetodd Posted August 7, 2010 Report Posted August 7, 2010 (edited) I'm betting it's more of a quality control problem at Corning, most of us got good runs but a few of those "friday" runs made it out as well and some of you got those instead. Dell doesn't have any control over that so the only way they could be considered culpable is if you argue they should have taken one piece of every production run and tested it themselves (something Corning should have done BTW). Then again, these ARE made in China so it is quite possible some plant owner has been trying to pull a fast one on Dell as so many of the Chinese plant owners have been doing for the last few years (deadly pet food, lead in toy paint, poisonous foodstuffs, deadly plastic additives, etc.). Guest Asphytxtc Posted August 9, 2010 Report Posted August 9, 2010 I too have given my streak quite a beating since i've had it. I try my best but its taken some serious falls onto concrete whilst im out and about which have resulted very little more than a few scratches to the sides and the battery cover flying off. Screen seems perfectly intact, not a single scratch at all, and it is an early model.
Guest JimiB Posted August 12, 2010 Report Posted August 12, 2010 Just broke my streak at work. I lent against a desk to look at something and heard/felt a faint crunchy click... checked the streak and the LCD is destroyed. gorilla glass is fine, but the LCD is of no use to anyone. :'( - jimi
Guest kastro4 Posted August 12, 2010 Report Posted August 12, 2010 mine is not broken yet, but the "not so gorilla glass" is badly scratched :D :D
Guest Metoo Posted August 14, 2010 Report Posted August 14, 2010 (edited) @CharlieBareham & popetodd If you read most Streak screen break threads you'll find that there are two separate issues: 1) breaking the Gorilla glass. OK, Sh*t happens, and no one claims the glass is indestructible - just more hardy and scratch resistant than ordinary glass. But that and Corning has absolutely nothing to do with: 2) the internal LCD cracking with no damage to the outer glass. It's this that is the big design fault with the Streak and what those suffering the calamity have every right to complain about. The LCD glass, which is extremely fragile, is pressed hard up against the outer glass so it gets the full force of any stress or bending. Try gentle finger pressure at the extreme corners of the screen and watch the LCD throw up those distortion patterns (seen best on the dark grey bootup screen). No other phone I know does that with such light pressure. It means the LCD has no shock protection at all, and the fault for that lies solely with Dell. Edited August 14, 2010 by Metoo
Guest Uberfish Posted August 14, 2010 Report Posted August 14, 2010 (edited) mine is not broken yet, but the "not so gorilla glass" is badly scratched :D :D How does this even happen? I'm guessing you're new to large screen touch smartphones? ;) My recommendation, get a case ASAP. I got one day one so I can clip it to my belt instead of keep it in my pocket, best investment ever. Two months and still only a very minor scratch on the back from placing it on a dirty table. Pockets are like water, they look soft and fabric lined, but three months of carrying about your cellphone in one and it will show big time! Edited August 14, 2010 by Uberfish

Pockets are like water, they look soft and fabric lined, but three months of carrying about your cellphone in one and it will show big time! I suspect the fact that you insist on a case indicates that you recognise how fragile a <11mm thin 5" glass fronted phone is. Many don't. Anyone who is subjecting the Streak to an environment where Gorilla glass gets scratched is asking for trouble. The Streak is just not designed (not is it marketed) for the rough and tumble of a primary mobile phone. It guess it would be fair to say that so far if you have avoided sitting down with the Streak in your back pocket, walking into a desk, or dropping it unintentionally onto the ground, is the reason why your Streak is so far undamaged. But bear in mind then that a case or holster will not protect you from the internal screen shatter - that has happened when lifted off a desk, taken out of a bag, and kept in a case. Which is why I tried to make a clear differentiation between the failures - one could be reasonably attributable to lack of care (all the external screen breakage reports I have seen have been the result of knocks or drops), whereas internal LCD cracks seem to happen to even the most careful and cosseting owners (not least Modaco's own Paul). It will be interesting to see if the much delayed US Streak suffers the same weaknesses (i.e. the corner stress test) Edited August 15, 2010 by Metoo

Guest JimiB Posted August 15, 2010 Report Posted August 15, 2010 u were asking for it by placing the streak in your pocket not facing ur body , how dumb is that Not very dumb I'd imagine. I never had any issues with my iPhone or N95 regardless of how they went in my pocket. There was such a minimal pressure onto the desk that the LCD shouldn't have been damaged. Also you made an excellent assumptin about how i put the device in my pocket, good job :D - jimi
Guest popetodd Posted August 15, 2010 Report Posted August 15, 2010 (edited) Take the "Not" off the first sentence and you'd have it right. If you didn't have issues with your other phones regardless of how you didn't bother to protect them when tossing them into a pocket it was for 2 reasons: 1) The screens are WAY smaller and thus less prone to breakage from flex. 2) You were lucky. Since the dawn of glass fronted open faced phones the rule has been to place the screen facing toward your body to protect it even when in a belt case. If that doesn't make sense to you then I don't know what to say. Edited August 15, 2010 by popetodd
Guest jdouce Posted August 15, 2010 Report Posted August 15, 2010 (edited) bad desgin and biog screen causes this i think compared to a phone any force exerted in the center of the screen will cause arround 1.5 times the bending moment assuming the ends are supported so even befor the bad design the streak is down to taking 0.6 of the force a 3.2 inch screen will take oh btw as for the distortion patterns its tft screen most of the new smartphones a oled ... apply pressure to a tft and u get distortion instantly oled well ... ive tried a few and pressed them pretty hard and havent seen a single bit of distortion. get yourself a HTC Universal or an SE X1 poke the screen and u'll get distortion same as the streak Edited August 15, 2010 by jdouce
Guest Metoo Posted August 15, 2010 Report Posted August 15, 2010 u were asking for it by placing the streak in your pocket not facing ur body , how dumb is that Like I said, stuff happens. The point is that the Gorilla glass is supposed to protect the fragile and expensive LCD inside - and all the evidence so far on every Streak forum is that it does exactly the opposite!
