galaxy s low data notification after two days?!

Hey all. I've had the galaxy S for two days now and in the middle of the night my phone started having some fits. The ringer was skipping and lagging during a call, then shortly after that the icon appeared saying the data storage was getting low. When I go to the menu it says theres 13.63gb still available? I haven't even downloaded much! I did sync facebook contacts though thinking that was the issue I un-sync'd them. Didn't help.

Can I fix this? The icon is annoying and I can't make it go away. Is the phone defective?
