Guest EZ44 Posted August 14, 2010 Report Posted August 14, 2010 (edited) Hi Everyone, I was wondering how many prefer the new keyboard layout in comparison to the old one. While I think the new layout is a bit easier to type with I prefer the old one overall. I wish that they gave us the option to choose and/or switch between them. I'm off to the 'Market' to see if there are better choices or does anyone know if it's possible to revert back to the old one? Please feel free to vote and/or post an alternative 3rd party keyboard solution. In the end we all just really want the best keyboard layout with ease of use. Thanks. Edited August 17, 2010 by EZ44
Guest XsCode Posted August 14, 2010 Report Posted August 14, 2010 van we have a third and fourth options? - Neither - I use a third party keyboard
Guest popetodd Posted August 14, 2010 Report Posted August 14, 2010 What third and fourth options? Dell has only given us two different keyboards, third party add on are your own business and have nothing to do with the stock keyboards. I want the old keyboard back, it offered a lot of functionality in a compact space. This new one is freaking huge, takes up a ton of screen (What for? the screen is huge so why no rescaling to a reasonable size?) and switching back and forth to get punctuation and numbers is a time wasting hassle and a half.

I agree, I feel like it's taking too many keystrokes on the new one compared to old for numbers, punctuation.

I don't like either keyboard hence the request for that option.. the new one has a few buttons missing, like the arrow keys, and the old keyboard's keys were too small for me. The fourth option was suggested to show that some people also dislike both keyboards but have found one that they DO like... It was only a suggestion that i thought would give a broader consensus of opinion...
Guest EZ44 Posted August 14, 2010 Report Posted August 14, 2010 van we have a third and fourth options? - Neither - I use a third party keyboard I thought about adding that as an option but I was more interested in getting a pulse on the stock keyboards. If it was available I would probably try Swype but it's only in a closed beta right now with no release date scheduled.
Guest EZ44 Posted August 14, 2010 Report Posted August 14, 2010 Another annoyance is that the arrows are gone. I wish it would 'zoom' in on the text like it does on my iPhone. My finger is always in the way when I try to move the cursor so I never see where it lands. Without the arrow keys it has made typing much harder IMHO.
Guest element332 Posted August 14, 2010 Report Posted August 14, 2010 yeah..i dont miss the num pad that much..but i want those arrows back...
Guest fards Posted August 14, 2010 Report Posted August 14, 2010 tbh I would like the old layout but slightly bigger.. I have big thumbs :D
Guest knightpants Posted August 14, 2010 Report Posted August 14, 2010 New keyboard seems to be very inaccurate for me. I don't know if it's just me getting used to it, but I'm constantly making mistakes in typing now even with the larger keys, I press backspace and keep hitting "l" and keep hitting "done" instead of backspace.... Actually preferred the cramped keyboard in 1.6
Guest timlardner Posted August 14, 2010 Report Posted August 14, 2010 When I first installed Eclair, I welcomed the new keyboard... However I quickly came to miss the stock 1.6 keyboard. The new one seems a little too big and it's not comfortable to type on. I wasn't a huge fan of the numpad but I'm missing it now it's gone. Hopefully when Eclair is officially released we'll get an option between the two :D
Guest timlardner Posted August 14, 2010 Report Posted August 14, 2010 (edited) Oops... double post! Edited August 15, 2010 by timlardner
Guest craigdabbs Posted August 14, 2010 Report Posted August 14, 2010 are there any 3rd party keyboards that let you see what your typing in rather than blank it all out and just show text. That is the beauty of the stock keyboards in my opinion. Also fards, did you get any further with using the old 1.6 apk on the 2.1?
Guest clickspace Posted August 14, 2010 Report Posted August 14, 2010 Definitely the old one. I type lightly and the new one misses half of the letters I type, even though I get feedback from vibrate. and. . .Arrow keys!!
Guest courtlandre Posted August 15, 2010 Report Posted August 15, 2010 Why not give us both.... and make them multitouch while they're at it!
Guest Asphytxtc Posted August 15, 2010 Report Posted August 15, 2010 I'm finding the same here, prefer the old 1.6 keyboard, finding the new one too hard to type on. I do actually miss the old numpad a lot, it was great for typing in quick passwords and the like which I do often. Currently I'm using smart keyboard which seems to be a nice multitouch mashup between the two, well worth checking out.
Guest jannism Posted August 15, 2010 Report Posted August 15, 2010 Preferred the old Layout but much prefer actually using this one. Old one produced far too many mistakes. Still a long way behind iphone, though.
Guest jdouce Posted August 15, 2010 Report Posted August 15, 2010 (edited) i prefer swype :D get extremetypist 40 wpm with swype can barley make 20 with mistakes on stock Edited August 15, 2010 by jdouce

Thanks anyway. Edited August 15, 2010 by popetodd
Guest burstatron Posted August 16, 2010 Report Posted August 16, 2010 I miss arrow keys and the numbers. Not a huge fan of the numberpad, would rather the numbers went along the top with a shift key to do ! " £ etc similar to the winmo layout. That worked great with fingers even though it was 20 times smaller IMHO
Guest Paul Posted August 16, 2010 Report Posted August 16, 2010 It should be possible to revert back to the old one... P
Guest rza.android Posted August 16, 2010 Report Posted August 16, 2010 i got used to the new one now i am liking the bigger buttons but im also missing the arrow keys. maybe we can implement something similar to the iphone magnifying glass to scroll text
Guest fards Posted August 16, 2010 Report Posted August 16, 2010 It should be possible to revert back to the old one... P i had a look, the apk installs etc the keyboard pops up then FC when you press a button.
Guest MrPokeylope Posted August 16, 2010 Report Posted August 16, 2010 Smart keyboard is easily on par with my old iphones. I honestly had no idea how much the dell keyboard was at fault! Can text easily again!
Guest craigdabbs Posted August 16, 2010 Report Posted August 16, 2010 also tried the old apk files, and get fc pressing a button. It would be great to get it working tho. I got the logs on another thread here of it FC. Im far from a android tech to understand it :D
