Guest nitko Posted August 16, 2010 Report Posted August 16, 2010 Have you noticed that only original charger does fast charging? Whatever else I connect my pulse to - pc, usb powersupply - it charges at snail pace :D And I have tried with various usb power adapters which delivers 1A and 2A currents but still the charge is slow. There must be some usb pins which identifies that the phone is connected to charger and not to PC which makes it charge faster. Anyone has idea which ones?

It would require more time than I have now to eplain why the phone charges faster via the 450mA charger than over a standard USB 2.0 port which delivers 500mA. The Pulse surely sends some kind of notification code to the charger (well it actually does not send anything on it's own as USB is a host - slave system :D ) which then in turn releases the whole chraging power (that sounds weird, I know). The same thing happens with iPhones with only one small exception: they don't charge at all with a charger that does not deliver the right code. Best regards, BB

Best regards, BB I was wondering about that a while back. I was using the USB socket on the back of my Virgin V+ (PVR) box and it only used to get to 97% then stop charging. Using the USB socket on the back of my Slingbox gets to 100% but is slow. I've actually brought an Apple charger from home to work today so I can take my official Pulse charger home as I wanted to see if it was any quicker to charge. Well, I will when I get my Pulse back from warranty repair.

Guest Daz555 Posted August 16, 2010 Report Posted August 16, 2010 (edited) The USB port on the V+ is a strange beast - it has to be the slowest charging port on the planet. I on occasion used it to charge my PSP but gave up because it was so slow. As for charging speeds generally - yes very weird. I have a 1000mA charger I bought for my desk at work and it is still far slower at charging the Pulse than the stock one. Edited August 16, 2010 by Daz555
Guest johninho Posted August 16, 2010 Report Posted August 16, 2010 Ooo!! I didn't know my V+ box had a USB socket! Thanks! I was planning on not learning anything today too... :D Generally put mine on to charge overnight so speed not usually a problem. My Slingbox died last week so I decided not to plug anything into that anymore and use a proper charger. Having fun with things dying on me recently, since May, my Fridge Freezer, Tumbledryer, Virgin V+ PVR, Slingbox and Pulse (twice). I think I must carry a harmful static electrical charge and zap everything I touch.
Guest nitko Posted August 16, 2010 Report Posted August 16, 2010 What I really hate is that sometimes my phone discharges and i want to charge it in car. I have 1A USB adapter in car and the phone charges just enough to be alive, after I get out of the car it is empty again :D There must be a simple solution like shorting data pins or something like that. I will try to examine original charger today.
Guest bbevan Posted August 16, 2010 Report Posted August 16, 2010 I have a Blackberry car charger and that charges even quicker than OEM charger.. I presume Blackberry must use the same "switch signal"

Well, I will when I get my Pulse back from warranty repair. When my pulse was on MCR 1.7 and charging by USB cable connected to Vista laptop it always used to stop at 98%. However on FLB 2.1 roms it goes to 100%. Charging pulse with original charger is lot faster than connected to PC.
Guest craigb244 Posted August 16, 2010 Report Posted August 16, 2010 Took one for the team! all the charger does it short out the data pins (2 middle connections on the usb port) checked it with a multimeter first and decided to take the power supply apart to make sure there was not more to it red box shows USB joints and the blue box shows the pins shorted between data

Although at least you can keep your broken Slingbox (maybe in bits) in your broken Pulses, inside the V+ box, which in turn in stored in the tumbledryer, which is on top of the fridge (unless you have a HUUUUUUGE fridge) :D :D [sECOND PICTURE] Is that chewing gum? Damn someone in Huawei is a joker!
Guest craigb244 Posted August 16, 2010 Report Posted August 16, 2010 Another update: The incar charger (1amp universal usb jobbie) as supplied by t-mobile does NOT connect the two data pins. explains why it took about a day to charge my phone in the car and why the battery does not charge if you use the phone (used navigator all day on the phone and at the end of they day had about the same battery level as i had when i started) I would say that if the two data connections are left open the phone assumes it may be connected to a pc as only does a trickle charge (supply power at the maximum the phone could ever use) and wait for data connection. if the two data connections are shorted the phone knows that it wont ever receive data connection from the device its connected to and take full power from it. The Huaewi psu is only 400mA the in car is 1000mA... fingers crossed the phone has internal regulation or i might see blue smoke of death.

Guest craigb244 Posted August 16, 2010 Report Posted August 16, 2010 hummm... been doing some probing.... found something interesting!
Guest craigb244 Posted August 16, 2010 Report Posted August 16, 2010 first I did this: soldered data pins on the usb port. Then I thought... why not dig out one of the MANY usb to usb mini cables I have and hook it up to the shitty adaptor t-mobile sent me. cut the wire and check the current draw...
Guest craigb244 Posted August 16, 2010 Report Posted August 16, 2010 (edited) If anyone does this it is at their OWN RISK... Im not been blamed for a broken phone or house fire! cut the wire, left the data wires (green and white) disconnected so i can short them on the wire and see what happens. (sorry my multimeter decided to play up and only display full amps and not mA so rounds it of to the nearest 0.01 grrr) ...ANYWAY... First off: Huaewi 400mA psu data wires disconnected : 380mA Huaewi 400mA psu data wires connected : 530mA!!!!! (from a 400mA PSU!) 1A car charger data wires disconnected : 380mA (humm so the phone limits itself to 380mA with the wires disconnected my guess is to protect the computers usb port) 1A car charger data wires connected : 950mA !!!! not sure if the phone is the limit here or the charger. either way the phone should go from flat to fully charged within 2hours with the 1500mA battery. i noticed ipod chargers (ones ive seen) are 1000mA chargers. if you buy a cheap chines one of these. connect the data pins inside. you will have a very fast charger. another option is to buy another usb cable. slice the cable carefully. pull out the green and white wires and cut them. leave them disconnected at the end leading to usb plug and short them leading to the phone plug. you then have a nice cable that will charge the phone on anything with a usb port at full speed (take caution if plugging into a high power hub or something as im not sure if the phone limits the current (it should!)) I tested this with the phone both on and off. Looks like its purely hardware controlled. (same effect with the phone both on and off) Edited August 16, 2010 by craigb244
Guest craigb244 Posted August 16, 2010 Report Posted August 16, 2010 Using the "charging cable" i make... charging from laptop - 700mA V+ box :D - 750mA Wii - 810mA Official 1000mA ipod charger - 1000mA :D (maybe 1000mA is the phones limit?)

Guest MarcellesWolles Posted August 16, 2010 Report Posted August 16, 2010 Hey. I´m using an Nokia 6500 Classic Charger and it works pretty good, speedcharge enabled. :D
Guest craigb244 Posted August 16, 2010 Report Posted August 16, 2010 yeh the adaptor t-mobile gave me is for that phone. maybe nokia short the 2 data pins to tell the phone its a charger :D what is the mA output of the charger?
Guest BigBearMDC Posted August 16, 2010 Report Posted August 16, 2010 That is interesting :D I have an iPhone charger at home for my iPod Touch, so I might try this out too :D Thanks! BTW: be careful! Maybe the phone itself does not limit the charging current! But seeing that the charging electronics are i the phone rather than in the charger this might not be a problem. As long as you don't use a current source instead of a voltage source xD Best regards, BB

(with the phone turned off...altho should only be a couple mins more with it turned on (assuming standby) ill going to leave my phone till its flat then charge it and work out the time it took with juiceplotter if its taking 3hours to charge at 1000mah you know that it is sinking 1500ma of power somewhere and that cant be good ;)
Guest Azurren Posted August 16, 2010 Report Posted August 16, 2010 I charged my phone with a wii once :D Then I realised that is was off. After 2 hours ;) Heh :D I always charge my phone from my PC when it's off.. In fact I can charge almost anything from my PC when it's off (Except and iPod?)
