Hi all,

Could anybody kindly tell me how to exchange files between the Streak and my desktop computer using WIFI only? I am fed up with using the cable...

Thanks in advance.

Hello there!

I've done this using a few different methods, previously. If you already have your Streak & desktop on a WiFi network, it should be pretty simple.

Using an Android FTP server (I've used swiFTP previously - worked alright), you will be able to setup a local server that can be accessed via an FTP/web browser on your computer.

Alternatively, if you're not already on a WiFi network, you can use Wireless Tether on your Streak in order to set up an AdHoc network, then connect to that using your PC and continue as above.

Hope that should help - if you need some more detail, let me know :D

"On Air" is another good one for two-way exchange.

Just be sure to hit the "back" button when you're done else it continues running. Also I think you need to keep the screen on to stop the app from sleeping and disconnecting. (Okay, it is a beta ....)

Another way is to use a file explorer that supports SMB shares (e.g. Astro plus SMB module). Then you can map a drive on your PC from your Streak.

Check out 'Awesome Drop'.

P

Yep, Awesome Drop works very well. Although not for 'sensitive stuff'

I would assume it would work just as well sending files to anyone, or anyone sending files to you, no?

I use aFile - www.mappn.com - which I find easy to use and can transfer directly over your local WiFi network without needing an internet connection

how about dropbox....i love that...

Forgot about that one... it has a LAN sync mode built in, so if you're on a local WiFi net then I expect it would use that to transfer rather quickly as opposed to doing it online.

I use "Web Sharing" ($3 I think) which lets you connect to your phone from any browser and has PW protection. It's a "run when you need it - shut down when done" kind of app, but it's pretty fast (to launch, shutdown, and copy/delete/rename files) and keeps the screen on while you work.

It "can" let you connect via 3G but I haven't found a port that AT&T isn't blocking, which the app warns might be true depending on telco.
