Galaxy S development gone Stale?

I promise this is not a dig at the devs, just wondered if there is a raft of work being done behind the scenes and if we will be getting some awesome new roms with gps and lag fixes and custom options the likes of which we are not even thinking of (the devs are clever buggers after all, and if any one can its paul and the guys), it just seems that every day I log in to modaco I get a little deflated.

Im looking forward to the next truly awesome rom that will give me even more to make my iphone friends envious!

I suspect most of the interest in making custom ROMs for the SGS is in a FroYo release, since it's just around the corner. Since they can't really do much until Samsung releases it with their device drivers, they're probably waiting on that.

Additionally, seems most of the efforts towards the SGS line right now is geared towards the lag-fix. When you have someone like Paul tweet that this is his favorite phone and primary device a month or so ago now saying he's sick of the lag and the build quality, it's probably not a good sign for the future of the phone in terms of getting a lot of dev love.

I think another issue is that the phone is fractured development-wise with all the stupid different variants (i9000, Captivate, Vibrant, Epic 4G). Unfortunately for we i9k owners, there's only one Cyanogen team member with an SGS and his is a Vibrant I believe. Seems that's the device that will get the most love and we'll just have to hope it's not too hard to port that over to the i9k.

At the rate things are going, I'm thinking I'll be on to a newer/better device long before the SGS gets the attention it deserves. What a shame, it's such stunning hardware in many ways.

Second that. I was happy with the Desire and it had so many updates and ROMs to try. More importantly, it got a lot of attention from Paul. I got the Galaxy after reading Paul's tweets about the Galaxy S being a great device so I was happy thinking it'll get a lot of love since it was his device of choice. But now, after having used it for almost a month, I gotta say that Galaxy S has too many problems to ignore. Its really a bad sign that the lag isn't the only issue to Paul as he seems quite ticked about the build quality. If Paul is going to ditch the Galaxy and if the September updates don't solve the issues, I might be selling the Galaxy S to get a phone that's better supported.

I really hope Paul will continue to support to Galaxy S though. I really am just holding out for September updates. But like the OP, I do check Modaco everyday and hope for updates and do feel down when there's nothing new. I read on the post where Paul was talking about the build quality that he's going to release a JP3 ROM with lagfix built in. Just waiting for that.

Because of the similarity of the design we can actually port the Vibrant stuff quite easily. If you look at the Vibrant XDA forums you'll see quite a bit of ROM work going on including a stock build of Eclair (working for the most part).

I see a lot of people talking about problems and build quality, but I've had my phone for a month now and never had a single issue with it?

Can someone tell me what is this lag issue?

You probably have seen it, but some of us don't care.. It really shouldn't be called lag. But basically, intermittently apps take a bit longer to start up, and sometimes when you click a button or perform an action on the phone, it stalls for a bit before doing it (like on a computer which is swapping).

It's thought it be I/O or Filesystem related (because EXT doesn't apparently suffer the same issue). I've experienced it many times, but I don't particularly care (I'm patient, so it doesn't bother me).

I remember when I first got the HTC Hero, the lag made the device almost unusable. This was fixed with MCR, but HTC firmware upgrades also took care of the lag. I'm currently on stock JF3 firmware, but from what I've read the lag is gone in the JMx builds. I'm sure Samsung are aware of the issues people have reported with the early firmwares and the 2.2 update in September will address them all.

As far as build quality, I'm over the moon with mine. Been using it A LOT for about a month and there isn't a single scratch or sign of wear anywhere on the device. I actually like the plastic back cover.

It'll be a shame if people are put off developing for the Galaxy S as the hardware is top notch and is - IMHO - by far the best Android handset currently available.

CyanogenMod guys are also very busy (Wes Garner, koush, justanothercrowd). They're working on Vibrant primarily, but I'm hoping we'll be able to adapt their kernel without too much trouble to I9000 (still haven't had time to actually take a look at it, though, damned GPS...)

I'm hoping that the development community is just waiting for a proper Froyo release before putting serious work into the SGS. No point investing time in the software when a game-changer like Froyo is around the corner. Hopefully Samsung will sort out the GPS and file system issues and with a fully functional driver set we'll see great things start to happen :D

I hope that some of the extras, such as lagfix hacks and such like, can be made optional in the new releases. I've found that the stock ROM is pretty good and newer firmware releases have been addressing lag, GPS issues, etc. It also looks like some of those lagfix hacks have caused other problems for people.
