Backing up prior to Upgrade

I'm finally looking to upgrade my original 1.5 vintage Pulse to 2.1 and all the helpful instructions say "backup all your data".

However they don't tend to say what to backup, where it is, or how to do it. Can someone look at the list below and highlight anything I've missed and the answers to the blanks?

  1. Applications
I think I've managed to do this via ASTRO file manager. Its kind of important since several apps aren't downloadable anymore.
  2. Contacts & Calendar
In theory this is supposed to happen via sync with Google, although its steadfastly refusing to complete the Contacts sync on my phone.
  3. APN Settings
Other than noting down on paper, I see no way to do this, and hopefully they are stored on the SIM?
  4. SMS Messages
No idea where these are stored, or how to back them up
  5. Bookmarks
And again, no idea where and how - although this is not too important.
  6. Desktop Setup & general Settings
I guess its impossible to back these up?

Thanks,

Sync your contacts & calendar to google cloud. APN Backup & Restore for APN settings and MyBackup Pro for everything else. :D

Thanks,

I use android commander to backup my apps. I use LauncherPro so I can backup and restore my icons and homescreens. I use google sync to backup contacts and calendar. You don't have to update APN settings, the setup is automatic on the most of the roms (the only rom that I tried thad didn't is the 1.7 vanilla rom).

Hope this helped

Hmm, lots of names of apps there. Looks like there is an open door for an upgrade app - backing the lot up for the multiple upgrades that everyone seems to need to do regularly.
