Guest luna_s Posted August 23, 2010 Report Posted August 23, 2010 I'm a new owner of a pulse, upto now i'm enjoying it, however i've a little problem. I modded the phone with the latest FLB - no problems runs great However, i'm on PAYG and i've noticed using online account info that the phone is accessing the internet every 30 mins, I don't really need this, its not much per day , but i'm usually in wireless zones so i have no need. I turned background data off and its still accessing. Question is, how can i monitor what is accessing 3g? or is it just a feature of the phone I don't have that many apps installed, and i've checked as many as i can for settings - nothing there ? Cheers mark

Guest luna_s Posted August 23, 2010 Report Posted August 23, 2010 cheers, That app doesn't appear to tell me what process is using 3g, upto now it's received 1.8KB and transmitted 3.5KB, not much i agree but i'd rather not have something accessing it when i don't need it!

Hmmm... Then how about APNdroid?
Guest luna_s Posted August 23, 2010 Report Posted August 23, 2010 cheers i'll try that, should do the job, i've a funny feeling its MMS that was causing it to connect, which i don't really need
Guest meinnit Posted August 23, 2010 Report Posted August 23, 2010 Try disabling this setting: Settings -> Wireless & networks -> Mobile networks -> Enable always-on mobile data This will turn off data when not in use for an extended period
Guest luna_s Posted August 23, 2010 Report Posted August 23, 2010 i didn't see that one!, thank you - well pretty much tooled up against 3g now - so fingers crossed it'll sort it out tbh i should change my data plan now i've got a smart phone!
Guest Daz555 Posted August 23, 2010 Report Posted August 23, 2010 Try disabling this setting: Settings -> Wireless & networks -> Mobile networks -> Enable always-on mobile data This will turn off data when not in use for an extended period Sends battery life through the roof as well, for me at least.
Guest Simon O Posted August 23, 2010 Report Posted August 23, 2010 Try disabling this setting: Settings -> Wireless & networks -> Mobile networks -> Enable always-on mobile data This will turn off data when not in use for an extended period Sorry but this is incorrect. This option just prevents the phone from keeping a network connection active. With this setting disabled an application will need to connect to the network itself which can take a little longer. The only solution to completely kill all data usage is to use an application such as APNdroid which renames the APN settings to prevent network access. Android phones are designed to be online 24/7. This is why any Android device that is sold on a pre-payment plan will have some form of 'unlimited' internet allowance.
Guest Simon O Posted August 23, 2010 Report Posted August 23, 2010 Sends battery life through the roof as well, for me at least. Of course it will. Disabling this option means that every application will have to initiate a connection with your phone provider each time it needs access to the internet. Having the option enabled means that one connection is started and kept alive whilst your phone is on. The option has nothing to do with disabling internet access on the phone.

Does a service like Google Talk still acces the internet when the phone is asleep, will you still be able to get gmail sync and gtalk messages?

They are supposed to do that, yes. I don't always sign in to Google Talk but I do receive my Gmail when the phone is sleeping.

When I take the phone out of standby after some time, I notice that the little 3G/E/G icon isn't there but then appears after a split second. From what I have read, this is supposed to be the intended behaviour. Yes a connection is required to be initiated by each application but it's only if no data has been used for an extended period of time (not sure of the exact timeframe but its definetly over an hour). Also yes, it doesn't completely kill data
Guest luna_s Posted August 24, 2010 Report Posted August 24, 2010 Thanks for the insight I'll probably change my plan eventually , like i said i have little need for data connectivity as i'm in wireless zones most of the time - plus coverage at work is terrible, but i like to turn the wireless off when i'm not using it to conserve battery, then it uses 3g instead. Seems like i can't do much about it as, first thing in the morning when i wake it up - it connects and I get charged for the day anyway! (Then its irrelevant what i have turned on and off ) Its my first smartphone, and i'm still learning!

If you are on T-Mobile PAYG you can buy 6 months worth of web access for £20 Load your credit with at least £20 then text '6monthweb' (without the quotes) to 441 it's as easy as that. It's the only realistic way to use the Pulse to its full capabilities. PS if the text message doesn't work, either go into a T-Mob shop or call 150 and say you are having problems
Guest Simon O Posted August 26, 2010 Report Posted August 26, 2010 It might be worth you topping up £10 credit then testing the code 6MONTHFREEWEB to 441 to get 6 months internet
