Guest badhorsey Posted August 23, 2010 Report Posted August 23, 2010 Hi All, I recently rooted my O2 Desire using Paul's excellent instructions (http://android.modaco.com/content/htc-desire-desire-modaco-com/307365/14-jun-r6-riskfreeroot-htc-desire-rooting-guide-now-with-hboot-0-80-and-os-to-1-21-support/) However, I now can't update it any further. The OTA update for 1.21.405.2 fails with an 'unable to write to SD card' error, and trying to install it manually via the bootloader fails too. I also tried ROM manager but that fails to - every ROM that I try to download returns an 'error downloading rom' message. So - suggestions would be warmly welcomed as to a way forward! I've searched extensively on this but can't find a solution. I'm on: S/W 1.15.405.4 CL155070 Baseband 32.36.00.28U_4.06.00.02_ Kernel 2.6.29-82821FB5 Bootloader .80 Thanks!

So... has nobody else had this problem? Surely I can't be the only O2 user who has ran afoul of this... Any suggestions at all would be really appreciated. I'll buy you a kitten or something.
Guest Asselberghs Posted September 3, 2010 Report Posted September 3, 2010 (edited) Any rooted phone will not be able to take an OTA update from the carrier you have your phone with. 1 of 2 things can happen, refusal to update, or a bricked phone and then your really screwed. If your phone still works and can access whatever version you have then your good:) MCR R8 is Pauls latest Desire rom in his MCR line (MoDaCo Costum Rom) it´s based on Android 2.2 Froyo, I suggest you update to that. http://android.modaco.com/content/htc-desi...chen-2-2-froyo/ And there is default zips available if your not a paid member, I diden´t check if you were to be honest, download the zip and put it on your phone, just in the "root" (first folder that is when you have access to the content of your phone, you but it there, in the "top" of that drive not into any folder beneath it) when you connect your phone on a windows machine. Have you got Clockwork Recovery mod? If you have good, if not you should be able to install it through ROM Manager, and thats the only thing you would want that for. Once you have clockwork mod shut down your phone. Power it on again but hold down power button and volume down. You will now go into htc "boot menu" use volume to navigate up and down, go to recovery and push the power buttom. Now your booting into Clockworkmod. Now you follow these steps: Boot into the ClockworkMod Recovery. This is what you´ve just done Once you enter ClockworkMod Recovery, use the side volume buttons to move around, and the optical trackpad to select. Select the option to Wipe data/factory reset. Then select the option to Wipe cache partition. Select Install zip from sdcard. Select Choose zip from sdcard. Select the MCR update.zip you put on your phone. Once the installation has finished, select +++++Go Back+++++ to get back to the main menu, and select the Reboot system now option. Now the HTC Desire should boot into MoDaCo Costum Rom R8. That would explain a lot. I only actually rooted to get away from the O2 ROM - is there any way to unroot and flash to a generic ROM that will receive OTA updates? I know it sounds like madness but I'm happier with a generic 'official' device rather than the instabilities of the root route. Thanks a million for your help with this :P

Thanks a million for your help with this :P There is, but not something I´ve taken a look at too hard, because I am satisfied with my MCR rom, it´s something to do with flashing the "original carrier rom" back onto your device if I´ve understood it correctly, such a rom is called a ruu, so you would have to find the correct O2 ruu for your country and flash that, take a look around MoDaCo for it, there is quite a bit around here I believe.
Guest EddyOS Posted September 6, 2010 Report Posted September 6, 2010 If you've got an o2 UK Desire their 2.2 update is out now, you can find the RUU file here: http://shipped-roms.com/shipped/Bravo/RUU_...4166_signed.exe (link may go down from time to time so keep trying)
