I have been trying to revert to 1.6 from the leaked 2.1 update after an absolute torrent of troubles - mainly the unbelievable instability - it just crashes if I even think about it, now. Also, it's stopped working as a phone - no signal! Nothing wrong with the sim card, either, I have to transfer that to my iPhone to make calls atm.

Trouble is I simply cannot get the thing into recovery mode - I have spent most of today trying but it just won't play ball. I have tried to update the recovery via fastboot but as PC Suite no longer recognises it when it's running normally, consequently the pc itself doesn't recognise it when it's in fastboot mode (which I can at least still get to) so is completely unaware of it being plugged in.

I've trawled through this (excellent) forum and others as well but so far all the really useful stuff that looks exactly like the help I need is at least one tantalising step out of reach.

Thanks but I've tried (the simpler version of) that and I can't get any further than:

3. Boot your streak in to fastboot (on/off button + camera)

Pressing fastboot on screen gets "Wait for USB Fastboot detect...." ...and just stays there. Plugging in the USB cable is useless.

I'm completely lost.

if its still not playing then stand it facing you with the buttons on top, press the middle of the vol + & - to hit them both at once then press and hold power. wait for the dell logo before releasing or just wait till you see the recovery menu. remember fastboot changed with 2.1 so its power button till the capacitive buttons light up then press and hold the shutter button till the screen goes white.

good luck

sod wot i wrote then thats badword up! it should change from waiting when connected...

If its not going into fastboot after you connect the usb cable then you may need to download drivers. Have you got DELL pc sync installed? That usually sorts out any driver issues.

have you tried manually updating the drivers, pointing it to the sdk usb drivers?

or used a different usb Port or even a different pc?

Yes to the above - "Windows was unable to install your Android 1.0" (It shows up in device manager as Android 1.0).

I guess I'm just stuck with a constantly crashing 2.1 lump until an official release come along. My only concern is that I'll face the same problems trying to install that, too.

Going into detail about what fards said you need to manually update your drivers to the ones u get from the SDK.

It will tell u they are wrong, but they arnt (I'm on Windows 7 and it worked).

Get to your device manager (Right click My Computer -> Properties -> Device Manager)

There should be an exclamation mark on a device called Android 1.0.

After seeing this you right click it and go to Properties, under the device tab click update driver.

Then Browse Manually for the driver, locate your Android SDK install and load the usb_driver folder, not the amd64 or i386.

Then pick the bootloader one.

This is what I did to get it working, bearing in mind that this is roughly the same on each Windows OS.

Thanks,

Shauneh

Thanks for the help but...no dice.

PC can't/won't load drivers to recognise device to enable detection of fastboot so I can't flash stock recovery ROM. I've been assuming all this time that this is what's preventing recovery mode from working in 2.1 (although I have definitely been there at least once since 2.1). I must have tried the volume keys/ on/off switch ruse over a hundred times now and it just freezes on the dell logo (buttons not lit). If I leave it for 20 minutes, when I return it's still the same except the battery/back cover has become uncomfortably warm.

I'll hold out for an official update but if I can't get that installed it's ebay or [...] or something...

what o/s are you using? its probably a long shot but here is the android usb driver

not sure if you rooted your streak and also if its booting up ok bar crashes. i didnt realise theres an app to add the recovery option to the bloody homescreen!

Quick boot

-------------

"Quickly and easily reboot your phone or boot your phone into recovery or bootloader mode. Create shortcuts on your home screen to boot into a specific mode / normally with one click."

"Now should work on all rooted Android phones - including phones with Sense UI!"

Install the Android SDK you need the fastboot from there and also the drivers are in there for the bootloader mode but u have to force the driver because it says its the wrong driver when it isn't. This worked for me on 64bit Win 7, so should work on all:

Get to your device manager (Right click My Computer -> Properties -> Device Manager)

There should be an exclamation mark on a device called Android 1.0.

After seeing this you right click it and go to Properties, under the device tab click update driver.

Guys,

I can't thank you enough for taking the time to help me out. I'm learning stuff bit by bit (I'm digging around the SDK) and I've made some progress in as much as getting it to flash the recovery rom in fastboot mode but, well that's about it as far as reverting back to 1.6 goes.

Somehow, something is preventing the vol buttons/on-off combo from functioning and without that I can't see how I can get to the recovery screen and install anything. The rooted method with an on-screen widget looks great but as mine is not rooted it's all looking a bit catch 22 (Can it be rooted without that screen - I'll have a look).

At least for now it's working: I'm running an unrooted, vanilla version of the leaked 2.1 OS as found through this site. Sim connectivity returned late last night and is still with me, it hasn't crashed yet today but the day is young...Twidroid, the browser and camera all appear to be stable at present, as does standard messaging and the phone.

As much as I want to play with the damn thing, it's just too frustrating to have it crash at the slightest thing so I think I can live with the basics for now (fingers crossed) and try and be patient while I wait for an official 2.1 release (or better).

I just hope I'm not back here bleating about the same issues if/when that happens. (new issues are, I think, OK)

fastboot -i 0x413c reboot-bootloader should get you into the recoverya

otherwise have you tried downloading the latest build through your webbrowser direct on the streak? you shouldn't need to go into recovery to do that...

I really am in Streak purgatory, now. I downloaded 4339 via the browser but after beginning the install process it just said the device was up to date and rebooted into 2.1 - does anyone know a way of fooling it into continuing to install the earlier version as this route seems to be my best shot?

As far as I can tell the only really reliable route to salvation is recovery mode via the volume up/down+on/off button combo but that just doesn't work - there is a flicker of white at the foot of the screen for a milisecond which I'm convinced is the recovery screen trying to make itself known before it's suppressed by some other process but after that I just get the Dell logo and nothing else, not even lit side buttons.

I can no longer leave it as is because I have no signal (sim works fine in my iPhone) so I need to bite the bullet and send it back and I'm pretty sure I can't send it back as faulty while it's running unoffical 2.1 firmaware.

Update: Managed to root it and install Quick Boot but there is definitely something suppressing Recovery mode as running Recovery from quick boot results in the same screen flicker, followed by Dell logo and... nothing else...just the sound of me poking my eyes out with blunt pencils while jabbing at my own particulars in frustration....
