Many Comments but upgrade to 2.1 in One Precise List

There are so many bits of info and problems, no problems, so many have successfully upgraded from 1.6 to 2.1. But for newbies to Android, very confusing, and equally important, whose direction should we take? Can a moderator or someone with a total understanding provide a simple list to accomplish so the rest of us can follow instructions and get to the current world, of at least 2.1. I find success stories dated 8/17 then problem stories 8/18, etc. Is there NOW, on 8/25, a simple list of items, step 1 step 2, etc., and exactly where to get and HOW to do, so the rest of us can now follow to achieve the same success so many others have in getting away from 1.6. If, after this time, there is no simple list and some are lucky, some aren't, then please tell us. I for one will then wait till (if ever) 2.1 or 2.2 is OTA, as I am not interested in bricking my phone.

Thanks to all of you for this great forum. If this is covered somewhere else I didn't find, I am sorry to duplicate. Please let me know.

These types of posts don't give nascar fans a good reputation. A good start is the stickied threads at the top of this forum. Perhaps the one that specifically mentions upgrading to 2.1 may be of particular help.

HOWEVER, if you are looking to upgrade your US streak, it is advisable to wait for an official update especially since you are a ' android newbie'.

Thats good to know. What is the problem with going to 2.1? Do you need to upgrade/downgrade to a compatible ROM then to 2.1?

Thanks.

Unfortunately that is the crux of the problem. As a newbie you want things to be straight-forward (hence the need to wait for an official OTA), however you also want to have the benefit of the best the device can give you without waiting (the reason for buying in the first place!), hence the desire to update immediately.

As someone new to android (the streak is my first device and use of android, obtained on the 3rd of August  ), and only today just having flashed to 2.1 from Dell Unlocked 00) what I would suggest, if you are impaitient and can't wait for the official OTA, is dowload a few essentials (listed below) and familiarise yourself with their use on your android device, then spend a few days reading all the postings here and on XDA relating to the 2.1 update then go to:-

http://android.modaco.com/content/dell-str...rboot-recovery/

http://www.streaksmart.com/2010/08/how-to-...ell-streak.html

to reference how to update specifically to 2.1 The first is actually pretty straight-forward, but then only if you are familiar with the basics of android (re: reading up on the forums)

(My biggest hurdle was actually getting my XP pc to recognise my streak! so make sure you get that taken care of first before even doing anything else!)

Utilities (Not in anyway the be-all!):

Mybackup pro (if you have data you wish to keep)

File explorer (OI, Astro, etc) for file/data manipulation on your device

Menu/Settings/About device (so you know what is what!)

Then you should be golden!

Of course with the caveat, that should things not go according to plan don't curse any of us! ;)

Exactly, I did previously review what you suggest and since I am a newbie, you go read the first few posts as if you are a newbie, and you will understand why I asked. Now I have my answer, I will wait for OTA. By the way, what has nascar fans have to do with a honest question? I guess asking an honest question of others whom know so much more, doesn't play well in this room.
