Guest vinokirk Posted August 27, 2010 Report Posted August 27, 2010 How do you make video calls on the streak?
Guest fards Posted August 27, 2010 Report Posted August 27, 2010 so far you need one of the 3rd party apps such as qik or fring or that other one that works with iphmoaners. coming soon gmail?
Guest vinokirk Posted August 27, 2010 Report Posted August 27, 2010 I feared so. Thats a bit gash, and I presume you can't use your phones contract you have to buy fring credit
Guest courtlandre Posted August 27, 2010 Report Posted August 27, 2010 fring to fring (or skype) is free.
Guest vinokirk Posted August 27, 2010 Report Posted August 27, 2010 I'm wanting to make video calls to friends phones. Wow I cant belive Android doesn't support video calling. I though it could never let me down...but it has :-(

Excuse me? Whats my friends phones go to do with it? Their phones can make 'native' video calls just fine. My android phone can not make 'native' video calls. Please...explain you comments

Please...explain you comments Just like a computer web cam you still need software to make the call - wether it's skype, fring, qik, etc. What phones can natively video call each other without software? The ipone 4 can but, only to other iphones. If your streak has fring, and your friend has fring, you can video call.
Guest rovex Posted August 27, 2010 Report Posted August 27, 2010 (edited) Indeed the streak doesnt have video calling as it was originally designed. It has IP calling, but not video calling if you get my meaning. The contracts we have have no video calling minutes allowance. This is the way its done on some phones and the way it was originally done by 3 many years ago. You needed no extra software, it was built in to the dialer and worked just like placing a call. The iPhone 4 doesn't have that sort of calling either, it has IP video-conferencing via Wifi only. Its just an Apple app, nothing more. Edited August 27, 2010 by rovex

This phone can natively video calling over G3 or faster networks like a charm to other Androids phone's with video calling features. grzz
Guest rovex Posted August 27, 2010 Report Posted August 27, 2010 Ok im asking because i dont know.. Can it call ANY 3G video phone such as a Nokia symbian on another network? TRUE video calling means you can call any video capable phone, out of the box, over 3G via the network and calls appear on your bill.
Guest fards Posted August 27, 2010 Report Posted August 27, 2010 Get a real phone like the Galaxy s. There's no competition, we're all droid here.. fwiw the samsung can call other samsungs with the same software installed, no more no less. I presume gingerbread will start to include facecalling in sys, but as of now you need a 3rd party app, whether its installed by your manufacturer or not.
Guest rovex Posted August 27, 2010 Report Posted August 27, 2010 Right, so its NOT video calling then. Video calling is a specific thing, that works with any brand and any network that has a video option in the dialler that routes via the networks telephony servers, NOT the 'internet'. Galaxy S trolling isn't advisable, its not hard to rip it to pieces really, its got MANY shortcomings.

Every phone ive had since 3g came out has been able to make video calls with no extra software. I dont know what country you're from so I can't comment, but here in the UK its been a basic fuction of a phone for over five years now.
Guest ClippinWings Posted August 27, 2010 Report Posted August 27, 2010 (edited) Excuse me? You're excused Whats my friends phones go to do with it? If you're freind's had Android phones with front facing cameras, they could video call with you (well, IP call, using a program like Fring) Their phones can make 'native' video calls just fine. If by 'native' you mean iphone4-iphone4 over wifi... then sure... they can do that. But that's not a limitation of your phone, it's a limitation of theirs. My android phone can not make 'native' video calls. again, If by 'native' you mean iphone4-iphone4 over wifi... buy an iphone. If you mean old school "video call" like European carriers have supported for years... Why would you want it to? Please...explain you comments I think i just did. "Video calling" as has existed for years is a dying breed... Why would I want to be able to "natively' video call my friends phone, using minutes and getting charged by my carrier, when I can install an app and use my unlimited data plan to video call anyone's phone who has a compatible app... OR better yet, anyone's PC who has skype? what you are asking Android to be capable of is really quite limited and I'm glad it isn't. On the other hand if you are talking about the iPhone 4... well... that's just sad. Edited August 27, 2010 by ClippinWings
Guest mrmrmrmr Posted August 27, 2010 Report Posted August 27, 2010 I have been a user of Nokia phones for some years and have been using 3g video calling over the 3g network not the IP (internet). Now I am a happy user of Dell Streak (and Android) but I am sad to see that native 3g video calling isn't available on Dell Streak / Android. If I were aware of this situation, I would have re-considered my decision while making the purchase for Dell Streak. I know that IP video calling is more efficient and economic but unfortunately my 70 year old father does have no knowledge of installing Fring or other software to his phone. This means I can not video call him even if I have Fring. However, if I had 3g video calling feature I could call him out of the box.
Guest rovex Posted August 27, 2010 Report Posted August 27, 2010 (edited) Hmm well carrier supported video calling actually works, it has protected priority bandwidth, so actually works without pausing every 5 seconds. Sure it costs money, but if you have a contract you can get free minutes. I agree its going out, but thats because it costs the networks money. Skype/Fring is slow and jerky at times, as is facetime, its a limited less functional, less complete and less simple option. Edited August 27, 2010 by rovex

Why would they create phones that use a standard never adopted here? I had a WM HTC phone years ago that supported video calling(imported it from the UK as a matter of fact)... never did get to use it... support for it simply doesn't exist here Edited August 27, 2010 by ClippinWings
Guest flashyphotos Posted August 27, 2010 Report Posted August 27, 2010 Well the phones are on sale in the UK & Europe, and as its an accepted standard here personally I would expect it (And in fact did expect it when I purchased my streak) The Network I use in the UK (GiffGaff) Give Unlimited Video Calls as well as voice calls to handsets on the same network, so we planned on using the free video minutes between family on the same network with other brand handsets that all accept and make video calls over the 3G / HSPDA Network natively.

Europe is bigger than the US, and video calling was adopted in Asia and Australia as well. The US is only 5% of the worlds population... Anyway im not having a go at you im having a go at JWhite who fails to realise than the Galaxy S is just the same as the streak in terms of support for 'video calling'. Android does video calling. It does it in a universally supported way, using open accepted standards, accessible not only by phone, but also by PCs. But I guess people complained when the 8 track died too. Edited August 27, 2010 by ClippinWings

Guest rovex Posted August 28, 2010 Report Posted August 28, 2010 Last time i checked, which was when i had an N95 8GB, Symbians could do IP video calling as well, so there isnt really an excuse for android and iOS not to be able to do both. Of course that would also mean they could call all the feature phones that have video calling as well. We know apple has no interest in following standards (or laws!), but Google should know better. To be honest i think its a way to make people upgrade to smart phones. They reject old standards and create new ones so people have to upgrade to maintain functionality.
Guest Shauneh Posted August 28, 2010 Report Posted August 28, 2010 (edited) Someone should close this thread, not really a matter that needs explaining anymore, no Video calling using the old tech (tele exchange). Can work over Wifi/fast enough data connections via Fring and Qik. Stop with the flaming theres really no need over something so trivial. Thanks, -- Shauneh Edited August 28, 2010 by Shauneh
