I've rooted my Galaxy S with no problems, I had a Hero previously but can't comment on how it compares to the Nexus One.

Guest Nesousx Posted August 30, 2010 Report Posted August 30, 2010 (edited) Here are a few reasons: On the hardware part (can't be changed stuff): Build quality sux: phone looks really cheap, scratch easely / get permanent stains. Microphone is too sensitive and it is really hard for the person you are calling to understand you if you are in a noisy / windy area. (nexus one worked GREAT on that part, thanks to dual microphones). Ugly Iphone look : both hardware and software (can be changed via apps on unrooted phone). Custom mods: Stalling/laging problem made me hate this phone in the first 24 hours I have had it, as of today it is almost fixed. Many ppl disappointed about the device, dev size. Not sure what we should expect in the near future for custom rom. In a few words, a very high potential phone with a very ugly look... If devs go into custom roms and mods this phone will definatley be awesome, if not... well it will be a very good piece of hardware totally under used. Edited August 30, 2010 by Nesousx

Guest Danvad Posted August 31, 2010 Report Posted August 31, 2010 Hi I just bought my Galaxy S last week, and I love it - sold my Nexus One yesterday ... The screen is the best I have seen, at lowest brightness is still usable outside. Swype keyboard is nice to use I think the design is nice, yes they have surely looked at Apple - but it's also a nice phone Yes - somtimes it lag but no big deal ... I wonder if the next update take care of it Danvad - Denmark
Guest Andrew Luecke Posted August 31, 2010 Report Posted August 31, 2010 Build quality is heavily underrated. It isn't that bad. I don't know anyone whose plastic has broken, and who cares if the back gets scratched? Realistically, the reasons not to get it are: 1) Some people reckon the lag. I have no probs here.. Either way, Froyo is being released 2) GPS accuracy has been funny. But Samsung reckons a fix will be out this month 3) No camera flash.. But, I take plenty of photos and I haven't missed it. 4) Voip doesn't work well, because they use the loudspeaker, so echo exists. But custom kernels will probably fix this 5) Not sure about the microphone issue, no issues there personally.. The "poor build quality" complaints seem to be a placebo effect. Two people have said their phones have gotten dodgy, but since then, I don't believe to have seen any others. It's possibly just a manufacturing defect. Happens with every device (even the Apple Macbook's had issues with their enclosures once). Some pro's over other devices are: 1) On the iPhone, you can't swap battery or add MicroSD cards. Furthermore, if you need to jailbreak, expect pain in the future. On the SGS, you don't particularly need to root. 2) Over most other mobiles, this phone uses a proper Atmel controller. Most the others are using hacked touchpad controllers which suffer errors in some cases. The controller technically supports MANY points too. 3) Bluetooth 3 / 802.11n 4) It is quite easy to install other firmware.. 5) It does use a toughened glass screen (gorilla glass). Some phones have dodgy screens which scratch up easily. But my advise is to wait for the GPS fix/Froyo release for this phone, because if GPS isn't fixed then, we know it wont be.. I still love this phone.

Guest Compuse Posted September 4, 2010 Report Posted September 4, 2010 Same here, i can navigate almost perfectly with both google maps as sygic maps 10 .. noticed maybe twice in hours of navigating that i were driving a possible parallel road =/ The only downside, besides the flash, is his size, .. i feel damn old with it in my pocket, making me need to place back my right foot when i kneel; scared of breaking it in half..

Say a prayer for me when you're down there! I am also looking at the Galaxy S for my missus and can't decide whether to or not. She likes my Desire but having 2 Desires may get confusing unless I get her a nice pink gel case for it. -valerebel Edited September 6, 2010 by valerebel

I still love this phone. nicely done. i really liked your take, having said that, i have shifted to iphone, but i still like it here, i am old member of modaco. a year now..# reasons for me to shift to iphone 1. build quality 2. lag 3 gps phone becomes unusable after sometime, & i have tried custom kernel, lag fixes, another thing i liked about iphone is ability to install any number of apps with same kind of speed & smoothness. thogh i am annoyed by there closed nature. & exclusive nature. but what can i say, some companies are like that, they kept to their core values, i am not saying this is gr8.
Guest anusthegreat Posted September 6, 2010 Report Posted September 6, 2010 I changed my Acer Liquid to Galaxy S three weeks ago and pretty good with that. I used to have a dent on Acer's screen; I was offered a nice price for it, so decided to switch. Liquid worked perfect for me for those months I've been using it, but Galaxy shocked at the first look. It's ugly, yeah, iPhone-looky and cheap, too. The plastic parts are not that good quality to be called a top cell-phone by Samsung. Anyway, who cares about the back side being scratched or anything else. As far as I reached home next day I bought the device, I decided to get a custom ROM and root it, too. Also, you will need a lag fix b/c of the internal memory timings failure. Anyway, a few hours I spent working on my phone did worth it: I got it perfectly configurated at the moment. I love the GPS and WiFi modules way to catch any signal, they work amazingly fast. :> Also, the screen is a real cool one actually, same as the working speed of the device on the whole. I'm pretty happy with it, if I don't mention it looks ugly imho. Size does matter, too. 4 inch screen makes the phone too big so I usually keep it in my handbag or something; jeans pocket is not the best way to carry the monster, lol. On the whole, you're getting a pretty decent phone; it definately justifies its price. Despite of the cheap-looking plastic case, it's a very high potentially developped phone, and I suppose I won't change it to anything else within next half a year.
Guest Blackfish Posted September 7, 2010 Report Posted September 7, 2010 Build quality sux: phone looks really cheap, scratch easely / get permanent stains. Sorry but that is just not true:
Guest anusthegreat Posted September 11, 2010 Report Posted September 11, 2010 You can never tell when it's broken. My Liquid's screen got that dent because of falling from like 30cm height. Although I used to keep my keys and a lighter in the same pocket with it, didn't get any scratch on it's screen. Anyway, the touchscreen phones are not the best thing to be thrown anywhere: keep 'em safe. The Galaxy I own at the moment already appears to have a few scratches of the back side because I usually keep it lying on a desk or somewhere esle. But who cares about the back side of the phone: I will probably change it to a new one if mine's broken. Another question is the display, which might cost you 1/3 of the whole cell-phone if you crash it. Forget about screen protectors or cases: it doesn't really make the phone look better unless you're looking for some new-styled look for it. Better just become a little more careful about your phone. :P

Is it easy to root and use custom ROMs, compared to Nexus One? Regards, BTJ Well you did ask for reasons NOT TO BUY. (-) Its quite shocking that the back cover of samsung's flagship phone has to be pried open to access the battery. (-) The issue of not able to go into Recovery/Download mode for some of the Galaxy S discourages rooting and/or flashing custom roms. I assume you have the intention of flashing custom roms, so the 2nd minus point is quite the determining factor when considering getting the galaxy s. Either Samsung fixes this issue (and not claim that the 2 functions are exclusive to their internal use only) - and there are sources where Samsung Canada says they are working on it - or you insist on getting the model with the recovery/download feature, else it's better off considering other alternative phones. Regards,

Regards, Just a note on the no recovery mode point. My Orange SGS had no three button recovery, I eventually used a .bat file froma thread on XDA to get it boot into recovery, I could then use one click lag fix and that roots the phone, then you can use an app like clockworkmods Rom manger to boot into recovery. Yes, a pain in the arse, but you can get round it.
