Guest AV1985 Posted September 2, 2010 Report Posted September 2, 2010 Does anyone have any link or advice on how to go about: a - rooting my Samsung Galaxy S b - installing a custom ROM Would really appreciate some simple advice for a rookie! Thanks!
Guest DistortedLoop Posted September 2, 2010 Report Posted September 2, 2010 Install one of Paul's ROMs or go to xda-developer forums, scroll down to the Samsung Galaxy S forum, select the Development section, there's a sticky at the top of the forum with all the info you need. Here's a direct link to the section.

Are there any ROMs you'd recommend for the Galaxy S? Also, I have used titanium backup to backup all apps from the Desire. Do you know if I can use a blanket restore on a rooted Galaxy S to get all my apps back? Thanks again.

They're pretty good internal "leaked" copies of Samsung's stuff, and greatly improve performance of the phone from what you probably got out of the box. There's a newer XWJM7 that's been leaked, and the feedback seems good so far on it, but I'm suffering ROM flash burnout and haven't tried it yet. Any of those three should give you a great experience, and if you're ambitious and look hard enough you could find supercurio's lag fix which reformats the /data partition to ext4 and really gives some extra snappiness to the feel of the phone. This is BETA (semi-private), but seems stable to me. I'd wait a day or two for it to come public, and he might have the simple update.zip method working properly by then to apply it. He's doing what Samsung should have out of the box. There's not a lot of custom ROMs for the SGS. Obviously Paul's MCR, but it's based on a buggy ROM in my opinion, and needs to be lag-fixed. The three I mentioned above DO NOT need lag-fixing; you will have a good useable phone with any of them. The other custom ROMs I know of are Samset, DocRambone, and one other I don't recall the name of. They're mostly about theming the phone and optimizing some stuff (zipalign, deodex) and removing stock apps they think have no value. I like the Samset theme...very slick, though a bit too orange on some of the things, but you get used to it. I'm currenlty just running stock HVJH1 with supercurio beta and ADW.Launcher (to get a more "vanilla" Android feel, since I am not a fan of TouchWiz). Let us know what you do! Take care.

Yes, you should be able to just use it to restore, but I've not tested moving from one phone to another with Tit. It might be a better idea to just start fresh and make sure you don't introduce issues from the old phone to the new. SGS is only my second Android phone (Nexus One is first), so I'm not sure about migrating from one platform to another. Nice thing is you can always reflash if there are issues.

Do you have a link for any of those stock firmwares including instructions on flashing them? I've managed to root my phone, there's a success! Thanks.

I've managed to root my phone, there's a success! Thanks. Just go to the original link I gave you above. All those roms are posted in that forum. You'll find them with the search feature. Search for Samset or Doc's, or just scan through the first few pages. You'll probably find some interesting threads in the process.

I was just wondering how to run the stock HVJH1 that you mentioned?
Guest DistortedLoop Posted September 3, 2010 Report Posted September 3, 2010 I found the ROMs and am finding Samset a bit unstable. I was just wondering how to run the stock HVJH1 that you mentioned? Really? I had no issues with Samset. What firmware ae you on right now? I was just wondering how to run the stock HVJH1 that you mentioned? Yeah, that one is pretty tough to find. It's buried in the thread for XFJM6. Here's the actual post. Personally, if I were reflashing a ROM right now, I'd go with XFJM6, but you should be happy with JH1 as well.

To be honest, I ran JG5 stock for a few hours. After a couple of hours, on a reboot, everything started force closing and it froze up on me. I've just installed JG5 with Paul's MCR r3 and to be honest, it's the first one that's reliable and quick! That said, I've stuck with TW. I quite like it actually! LauncherPro, which I used to swear by, is really laggy. I've ran lagfix too. Quadrant has me at 1885. I've noticed a few times though (twice this morning) that the screen goes black and I can't get it back on, I have to take the battery out to reboot! That doesn't sound healthy! Some apps also keep asking me for SU which is annoying!
