Guest Paul Posted September 3, 2010 Report Posted September 3, 2010 As the topic title says... I think it is. To test, enable USB debugging then... adb shell su id[/code] ...and you'll probably see you're root. Interesting... particularly as this is an enormous security hole. I see no reason why any app can't call the su binary, elevate itself to root privileges and do all sorts of naughty things! P PS This is the official OTA download from O2!
Guest richardlai Posted September 3, 2010 Report Posted September 3, 2010 Hmm... the screenshot apps aren't working, though.
Guest Paul Posted September 3, 2010 Report Posted September 3, 2010 Screenshots apps? Use DDMS. P
Guest richardlai Posted September 3, 2010 Report Posted September 3, 2010 While we're here, are you guys seeing random LED flashes on the buttons?
Guest timbomfg Posted September 3, 2010 Report Posted September 3, 2010 Barnacle dies a death when i try to use it. Looks like i'm still going to have to install universal root.
Guest Paul Posted September 3, 2010 Report Posted September 3, 2010 While we're here, are you guys seeing random LED flashes on the buttons? Reapply the update. P
Guest Paul Posted September 3, 2010 Report Posted September 3, 2010 Definitely pre-rooted. Pushed ChainsDD's superuser bits to /data/local, ADB'd in, switched to su, remounted /system as rw, cat'd Superuser APK and su binary to relevant places, now all the rooty bits work great. Silly Dell (or great Dell, depending on your perspective). P

Guest twe Posted September 3, 2010 Report Posted September 3, 2010 Will we be seeing any more roms from you on this fine device Paul?
Guest jutley Posted September 3, 2010 Report Posted September 3, 2010 (edited) i just think they forgot to close the backdoor before they left so you might see the update pulled and reuploded to close the root well its too late for that now dell i just plastered the update all over medifire, rapidshare, etc and its prerooted.F... yea Edited September 3, 2010 by jutley
Guest Paul Posted September 3, 2010 Report Posted September 3, 2010 I think they will (or SHOULD) pull the update to close the hole. I'd recommend everyone replaces the SU binary with ChainsDD's superuser - this is very insecure! P
Guest Paul Posted September 3, 2010 Report Posted September 3, 2010 Will we be seeing any more roms from you on this fine device Paul? YES! Working on a 8105 MCR now. P
Guest twe Posted September 3, 2010 Report Posted September 3, 2010 YES! Working on a 8105 MCR now. P Nice one! Got your R8 for Desire on my current phone but should have my Dell Streak waiting at home today! Hopefully everything is fine and the ebay seler hasn't tried to rob me! Probably will sell my Desire as I have started to use the phone for mainly web browsing, other internet stuff and playing games on it.
Guest Dunhamzzz Posted September 3, 2010 Report Posted September 3, 2010 I thought this was the case but it didn't work as MyBackupPro said it had root access when I first started it. I went into terminal and it wouldn;t let me su though..
Guest tehchurch Posted September 3, 2010 Report Posted September 3, 2010 No HTC sense on update. Sigh
Guest 323spoon Posted September 3, 2010 Report Posted September 3, 2010 No HTC sense on update. Sigh I hate to be the one to break it you but the Streak is made by Dell, not HTC. Thes why it hasnt got "HTC" Sense.
Guest radomir Posted September 3, 2010 Report Posted September 3, 2010 No HTC sense on update. Sigh Sense oficial only in HTC....
Guest tehchurch Posted September 3, 2010 Report Posted September 3, 2010 your very true *blushes* Shame they couldnt open it to other users of android
Guest tellisnz Posted September 3, 2010 Report Posted September 3, 2010 YES! Working on a 8105 MCR now. P Is it possible to put the 1.6 keyboard back in? I hate the new one!
Guest courtlandre Posted September 3, 2010 Report Posted September 3, 2010 your very true *blushes* Shame they couldnt open it to other users of android It's how they differentiate their products from others. Business 101. Although I'm sure the streak will see sense on it one of these days... just not from Dell... or HTC.

I'd recommend everyone replaces the SU binary with ChainsDD's superuser - this is very insecure! P So how do we do that paul? or shall we just wait for your mcr 2.1?
Guest richardlai Posted September 3, 2010 Report Posted September 3, 2010 Reapply the update. P Hmm, LEDs still flashing. Will try from recovery mode later.
Guest muo Posted September 4, 2010 Report Posted September 4, 2010 Hmm, LEDs still flashing. Will try from recovery mode later. My LEDs were flashing the first time I did the update. Then I tired once more and everything appears to be fine. Possibly try it a third time. Is it possible to put the 1.6 keyboard back in? I would love to have the 1.6 keyboard, I miss it very much.
