Broken screen advice

After my last night in london, a phenominal amount of alcohol and a diverted bus (around 3 miles away from where i lived) i now have a broken phone. I'm not sure if it is the digitiser, mainly because i do not know what a digitiser is. The screen works 100% and there are no dead sections, i.e. i can write texts etc as the screen shows all sections and accepts input from all areas.

Therefore i was wondering if i could buy something like below (although i doubt the stationary image would peel off etc too easily from the screen) or if there is any other way to sort this out. Unfortunatly until i properly get it fixed i'm stuck with an Iphone.... desperation ensues!!!

I wonder if i take it in for the volume up button not working they might also change the casing! :P

EDIT: I have read this, http://android.modaco.com/content/t-mobile...t-screen-glass/, just i wanted to see if there were any other options, and cheaper options!

In my experience, it is virtually impossible to seperate glass and digitiser, so transplanting your own digitiser to a new glass screen is something I wouldn't even try.

To be honest, I don't even know why they sell glass screens only.

I found this: http://www.globaldirectparts.com/T-Mobile-...arts-s/6259.htm

You've just cracked the glass front luckily. The actual touchscreen sits under this but isn't attached. Just buy that dummy and hopefully the front will be scratch free.

Many thanks for the replies, i've bought the dummy phone so will see what can be salvaged from it - just in case anyone else has a broken screen or would like the back cover etc.

I like to have the back cover.

Is it black or white the back cover?

You're kidding me.

The Pulse is one of the only phones to NOT make them impossible to seperate?

Holy crap.

I've had the phone opened a few times. For me it looks like the digitizer is glued onto the front case. It might though be that it is only attached to the rubber foam surrounding the screen. It kinda looks like you could scratch it off, but I wouldn't risk it to be honest. But well, even if you damage the digitizer you'd have just wasted 2 bucks which is not that bad :P

Best regards,

BB

see this photo from BigBearMDC when he took a Pulse apart: http://twitpic.com/2e9moy

The glass front is just for protection. The touch screen sits underneath. It's capacitive so can work this way. Devices with resistive screens require you to actually touch the touchscreen itself.

edit: or I'm wrong.. oh well :P

Hm in that case it'll be cheaper to buy a broken pulse on ebay and swap the front over. Or try and buy a replacement front cheap.

Aw this is an awful picture ... shot with my other Pulse :)

What you don't see here is the rubber foam surrounding the screen. On the upper left (that slightly "greener" square) sits the touchscreen controller. If you manage to pull off the rubber foam you might be able to just lift the touchscreen. But I'm not sure if it is made out of foil or a solid plate ... You'll have to be careful. I personally believe that its a plastic foil that is glued onto the glass screen, but I hope I'm wrong :(

If you really manage to exchange the touchscreen be sure to settle it correct into the other housing, otherwise you'll have a constant touch - offset.

Best regards,

BB

Ahhh, this is all bad news. Anyway i thought i'd give you an update on my purchase (i've got some pics so i'll try to put them up later).

The thing will not come apart easily!, however the back cover is perfect replacement if anyone has a broken or lost cover. You need to lift it off with a stanley knife, as it is sellotaped down rather than using the clips. The clips are there just not being used!

The front bezel is a dark chrome, which, if i can remove the middle section and replace the screen (i do understand the risks mentioned above) it would look quite cool. Unfortunately the middle section (as you look at the phone the bit with the sd card slot, power button and volume buttons) is made of chuck norris grade plastic, probably more strong than the front cover unfortunately. Anyway if i can roundhouse kick the plastic off, i'll provide another update.

Therefore: 1) if you want a replacement back cover for a £5 all in its worth a purchase. 2) If you want the screen....... you'll have to wait and see

No.

The digitizer is very hard to peel off - even more so when the screen has broken in to sections. Therefore i do not know if it is just the digitizer that is now broken or just the screen not recgnoising input. But the screen, which is plastic and not glass, does not show any sort of recognition from the touchscreen.

I'm hoping to get my friends pulse with a broken usb port - where i'll swap over the screen to my one. It will also mean i have a spare broken pulse that will be dismantled for the pleasure (sadistic or not) of the modaco community. Unfortunately she's no longer working at my local pub, but i'll report back if i can get the phone.

If not goodbye friends. The smug world of the iphone user is my new home...bugger.... i'm not eating tofu and swahili peace chips!
