Increasing WI-Fi tether speed?

Having sorted out all the usual newbie problems when starting with Android and my Pulse Mini I can now tether to my Ipad. However, the speed is very very slow, is there any way to speed it up or does it depend on issues such as signal strength from the ISP etc.
