Hot Battery

Noticed an interesting effect on the battery in very hot weather. Driving across the desert in Arizona/Nevada using Copilot with the Pulse on charge it suddenly warned me the battery was nearly dead. Seems it had stopped charging when it got too hot, the sun was shining on it through the windscreen & the outside temperature was 115 F. The only way to get it to charge again was to hold it in front of the aircon vent for a few minutes. Had to do that several times.

Not too impressed with Copilot, it regularly crashed, usually approaching an intersection, changed voices randomly and then decided that the only places it knew by name were places I'd already been. I could select a destination from the map but name searching failed completely. Raised a support ticket when I got back & they have just replied that I can't have installed it properly, don't really buy that as it worked fine for the first ten days before forgetting everywhere.

The co-pilot problems were probably caused by the Pulses lack of RAM. (Did you reboot it before starting your trip? Seriously. You'd be surprised just how much that helps)

But the battery stopped charging? Imo I think it's a safety feature to stop the battery exploding (Temperature to high, phone cuts external power as it may be the charger is overloading. (iPhone kinda springs to mind.. Boom)

The colour of the pulse really kills it. Even in Cornwall a little sun can make the device to hot to hold midsummer. Put something white behind it, even if it's a tissue, should keep the heat down a little.

Rebooted several times but seemed to make little difference.

Wish I'd thought of the tissue - good idea :P

Try Ndrive out. I find it runs a lot better on the pulse than many other navigation apps and the maps are pretty good. They use mapping data from Tele atlas.

Errrr, I got two backplates with my Pulse - black and white... I'm surprised You haven't?

Anyways, I'm not sure that white backplate would be of ANY help... tissue might be better option - it's thicker and doesn't conduct heat...

Thanks - I'll try that next time.

Went with Copilot for 2 week trip to US as it was only £17 for the US version - that's what come of going for the cheapest. :P

I've tested CoPilot, Ndrive, iGo and Navigon out. I found CoPilot sluggish, iGo using too much RAM, Navigon was very slow if you use the 3D map. Ndrive just seems well optimized.

You can get a 30day fully working trial from the Android Market which allows you to try one map out. Give it a shot, you don't have anything to lose. Oh another good thing is the app itself is small. It sticks most of it's files onto the SD :)
