Guest theboxman Posted September 8, 2010 Report Posted September 8, 2010 (edited) Hi all, presently the PSFreedom build presently available is for people running cyanogenmod ROMs only. Given I love HTC sense, and therefore hate cyanogenmod and furthermore that I wouldn't give up MoDaCo custom ROMs period I'm posting to ask if would be possible to incorporate/adapt the relelvant kernal patch for the USB host functionality and files for the hack into the MoDaCo ROM, and either ask for help doing that myself (if it's easy which I suspect it won't be) or ask very nicely from some help for the community! I'm sure I'm not the only one that loves the MoDaCo roms so much that I won't give them up even to be able to run Homebrew on my PS3. More info here: http://www.ps3-hacks.com/2010/09/06/hack-y...-androiddesire/ Thanks for your help all! :-D Edited September 8, 2010 by theboxman
Guest ZYDESIRE Posted September 8, 2010 Report Posted September 8, 2010 Yeah I would love this for the HTC Desire using the Modaco roms, I tried it yesterday using open desire rom and it worked perfect but I dont like his roms, nor want to have to flash back and forward.

Yeh Paul should be proud his ROM is so good I'm refusing to unlock the full power of my PS3 because I love them so much. Now that's loyalty :P

Guest pina Posted September 8, 2010 Report Posted September 8, 2010 (edited) if you're using rom manager, you can switch roms really fast Edited September 8, 2010 by pina
Guest Asselberghs Posted September 8, 2010 Report Posted September 8, 2010 what in fact can "Homebrew" be used for on PS3? I´ve only heard of Homebrew for Wii to enable dvd playback on a Wii. What is "Homebrew" good for on PS3?
Guest theboxman Posted September 8, 2010 Report Posted September 8, 2010 what in fact can "Homebrew" be used for on PS3? I´ve only heard of Homebrew for Wii to enable dvd playback on a Wii. What is "Homebrew" good for on PS3? This hack is so hot-off-the-press (days old) that only one homebrew app has been released. However dev enirnoments are out there already .There are roamers of PS2 backcompatability working already on all consoles including slims, It should also permit otherOS to be re-enabled however it should be able to run under 'gameos' removing all the restrictions sony placed on how much of the ps3's potential could be used in other OS (remember the PS3 is essentially a very powerful computer). Not to mention it's highly likely we'll see mediaplayers (like XBMC) ported to it and lots of other goodies. For now the first homebrew app was released yesterday - it's a simple ftp server. I intend trying my hand a bit myself at some apps. There is also a program which I suppose constitutes one of the first real "homebrew" apps for extracting your games to an external hard-disk which lets you keep a backup and is reported to substantially reduce load times. However the real advantage lies in unlocking the power of your PS3 to do whatever you want. The PS3 is basically a mini-supercomputer ;-)
Guest theboxman Posted September 8, 2010 Report Posted September 8, 2010 dont you have to flash back and forwards with the OD roms, i thought when it was in jailbreak mode most other usb functions are broke till you flash back again. I believe that presently this would break use as a hard-disk and wifi. However the flash to switch it on and off is a much smaller one, and given there's no need for a change of ROMs I can skip wiping which makes it much more pain-free. Also on MoDaCo custom I would be quite happy to leave the device hacked until I needed wifi in which-case reboot quick tweak and we're golden. It's also highly likely that this issue with disabling USB will be historical soon :-D Talking to people on the development thread (linekd from the ps3 links article) it seems that what needs done is compiling the patched kernel. Though never having built an android kernal I'm not quite sure where to start there....hence posting up to bring our plight to the attentio nof someone with the skills! :-)
Guest trstn Posted September 8, 2010 Report Posted September 8, 2010 Off topic but don't be hating cyanogenmod too much, they've acheived a lot for the scene and their code finds it's way all over, including into modaco roms I think :P

Just that for me personally I will never use any firmware without HTC Sense (unless it brings out something spectacularly better of course!). Hence while I really don't like cyanogenmod that doesn't mean I'm biggoted to the point that I can't admit that it does really excel in many areas! The fact is Sense UI is so beautiful I'm unwilling to sacrifice it even though I've heard CM runs better etc etc. ;-) (and yes I know a number of parts of various roms have been taken from CM - network settings for various carriers for example)! I'm just humbly requesting a MoDaCo custom ROM which contains or is compatable with PSFreedom patches as it is, IMHO the best ROM on the planet and the reason I went add free (well that and as a thanks for the root!).

I'm presently giving it a bash on r8 ............. more than likely it'll go pearshaped and I'll need the nandroid backup I'm presently creating..... wish me luck! Edit: No luck. Might have just been me I suppose. Flashed the ps3-signed file after a flash of r8...the result was that the phone didn't get past the first HTC screen at startup. Left it for five mins before re-entering recovery and re-flashing r8. Phone is booting again. Looks like it is going to need tweaked :-/ Edit: Actually don't believe what I said beforehand...Just to doublecheck everything I grudgingly installed Open Desire 4.0.10 ........ and after flashing it's not getting past the htc screen either. Don't understand it will play with it tomorrow but for now I'm going back to the happy secure world of modaco and staying there :-) Edited September 9, 2010 by theboxman

Guest DLDarklink Posted September 9, 2010 Report Posted September 9, 2010 At XDA they have a solution! :P Flash a custom (permanent) recovery on your phone from Amon_RA using Unrevoked. This CR (custom recovery) only does one thing: jailbreaking the PS3, nothing more - nothing less. Clockwork still works with the Rom Manager but can't be accessed by the CR as it is just a static screen. (have not tested it yet, I'm lacking a PS3 with 3.41 since a recently updated my firmware (idiot))

The loss of USB functions with the OpenDesire ROM isn't that much of an issue though, phone still works as a phone for calls\texts\internet. ...Just saying mainly because adding the support for the jailbreak from my understanding is pretty trivial for someone with Paul's skills.
Guest zoidy84 Posted September 10, 2010 Report Posted September 10, 2010 Tried PSFreedom last night by going to OD 4.0.4 and doing the whole dance, worked like a charm however left me having to use a below par ROM in OD. Have been tossing and turning last night about which is more important to me and i'm flashing back to R8 as we speak. Will look into the thing over at XDA though as its prob not as bad as spending 30 minutes performing Nandroid backup->flash OD->play PS3->reflash r8->Nandroid restore->reboot! I don't know if it can be done but would love a PSFreedom compatible MCR ... not as many people jumping in this thread as i thought though!

Until HTC releases the source code for the froyo desire kernel, psfreedom will not be available on sense 2.2 roms.
Guest Paul Posted September 10, 2010 Report Posted September 10, 2010 Well, not necessarily, we might be able to do it as a module. I need to look into exactly what the changes are... P

True, lets call it a temporary work-around instead of a solution.

I'm wondering, you do have to plug in the desire each time if you want to jailbreak it, right? Or is it a one-time only process?
Guest pina Posted September 12, 2010 Report Posted September 12, 2010 Each time m8. So I assume its a risk free operation since its only jailbroken when the desire is connected? And when not connected, my ps3 is just a normal one?

You connect the phone with the USB cable Remove PS3 power cable and then plug it back in Press power button on PS3 Press eject button on PS3 straight away after Wait 5-10 seconds PS3 comes on with ability to run unsigned code At this point you can remove the USB cable\Phone If you turn the PS3 off, you have to do the above steps again. As far as this sort of thing goes it's as safe as your going to get...very safe!
