O2 UK - Can i root it?

Hi,

I have an N1 and O2 "owe" me a phone, i want the desire, but i want to make sure i can root it before i agree to it. Anyone know what boot loader version they are coming with at the moment and if they can be rooted for inserting custom ROM's?

You can root anything once the new unrEVOked version comes out - you can also debrand it to stock Desire ROMs too so there's no issues

The Current Hboot I believe is 0.92 on newer devices.

I was using a Desire HBoot 0.75 at the time of my root. IIRC it has now become 0.80, with MCR R8 but it´s rooted so it´s fine, and besides 0.80 should be rootable IIRC it´s 0.92 and beyond thats the problem.

So I haven´t needed to do this so I can´t say if it works 100% but following this http://android.modaco.com/content/htc-desi...owngrade-hboot/

You should, if the Desire from O2 has a HBoot of 0.92 or higher, be able to downgrade your your Hboot so it can be rooted. There might also be trouble with HBoot 0.83 and beyond, but it´s not a problem if you can downgrade HBoot.

In regards to the whole rooting issue I am pritty sure 0.80 can be rooted and 0.75 can definitely be rooted.

So presuming downgrading works there shoulden´t be a problem with it.

You can either when rooting use Pauls guide or use www.unrevoked.com the one click root method.

Latest HBOOT is 0.93 and unrEVOked rooted it first time (I used the now taken down version) so you don't need to downgrade anything...the next version (3.2.1) should be out any day now so you can just use that

You won't regret it!! Chances are you'll be on 2.2 out the box but it's always worth debranding so you get updates in future. Or just root and use custom ROMs

O2's 2.2 which was released last week has been pulled already (unstable browser), so it'll likely still be 2.1 unfortunately.

The OTA yes but I assume o2/HTC have the RUU and can use this - if not you could just use the RUU file anyway if you wanted to - or debrand and go the WWE route

Yeah but the RUU has the same issues, unstable browser and dropping wifi. Only seems to be apparent one some phones though.

Much better rooting and installing MCR :P
