Guest TGWS Posted September 10, 2010 Report Posted September 10, 2010 Can somone explain the Pro's & Con's for Rooting my phone and installing a custom Rom. And everything. Cheers.
Guest tabor56 Posted September 11, 2010 Report Posted September 11, 2010 i'm not the biggest android buff so might not be best to answer, but rooting allows you to get super user access to your handset and allows you install apps that you wouldnt usually be able to install such as WI-FI tether, Root file explorers. Biggest con is there is a very small chance of bricking your phone, although it rarely happens if done right. hope that helps

Guest Simon O Posted September 11, 2010 Report Posted September 11, 2010 Rooting Pros Will allow you to have complete control over your phone. Allows you to use system backup applications such as Titanium Backup which require root in order to backup your installed apps etc Allows you to remove system applications that you do not require Rooting cons Can leave you vulnerable to infection from any viruses or trojans that may surface in the future Can be easy to remove critical system files if you do not know what you are doing Custom ROM pros Usually better optimized than stock roms resulting in lower RAM usage and smoother operation Can provide you wish feature not available in stock roms like Wireless tethering Custom ROM cons May not have been tested as thoroughly as official stock roms which may results in unknown bugs Requires you to root the phone and install a custom recovery image which may not be easy for you to do if I think of any more I'll add them, or somebody else can :P

So if i wanted a 2.1 Custom rom i would: Have to root my phone for it to work? How do i root my phone aswell, there is no guide for this.

Guest Ashbeard Posted September 11, 2010 Report Posted September 11, 2010 My advice is that if you ask a question such as this, wait longer than half an hour before posting ellipsis. This forum is not your own personal tech support. People aren't on your beck and call.
Guest Ashbeard Posted September 11, 2010 Report Posted September 11, 2010 Oh wait, my bad, you were expecting a reply within 16 minutes of your post.
Guest gusthy Posted September 11, 2010 Report Posted September 11, 2010 Custom ROM cons May not have been tested as thoroughly as official stock roms which may results in unknown bugs I must disagree, since custom roms are tested by the community, not by a company's limite resources.

Do you think the company's limited resources are less than this board? They will have specialised software and tests that few here would have access to.

Sure, but 99% of the modded rom is their binaries - what we do is that we USE their software in real life, find the bugs / inconveniences they couldn't find with their automated or limited tests and fix them.
Guest Speckles Posted September 11, 2010 Report Posted September 11, 2010 Do you think the company's limited resources are less than this board? For example, the "missing sms" bugs never got detected by such software, but very quickly by users of this forum :P Sure, the software used by manufacturers/carriers is useful, but you can never beat an army of volunteers for proper real-life testing. Here's another con: If you root your phone and have debugging support turned on (required by some apps), don't bother with security software on your phone as it's easily bypassed. For example, it takes about 5 seconds to disable the pattern lock and about a minute to disable wavesecure. An unrooted phone, on the other hand, is more difficult (you can still bypass a lot of security software using safe-mode, but you'll still have things like pattern lock working)
