Guest sSword Posted September 13, 2010 Report Posted September 13, 2010 Sorry to ask such a basic questions... I live in Norway and only have access to free apps on the Market. I want to get the Market enbabler installed so I need to root my Desire. I am a little confused with all the information here and would like to know the following: Can I root my fone without installing a custom rom? Will I have to downgrade my firmware to be able to root my fone? Does downgrading the Firmware have any effect on the Os im running? (I obviously want to stay on 2.2) I running a desire with the recent ota 2.2 update. Thanks!
Guest DragosP Posted September 13, 2010 Report Posted September 13, 2010 1. Generally speaking, yes. 2. Particularly, you have to because the OTA. 3. Yes, you will have Eclair, but you can (any time) flash a Rom with Froyo.
Guest EddyOS Posted September 13, 2010 Report Posted September 13, 2010 At this moment you can't root 2.2, but once unrEVOked 3.2 is properly out then you can as this works fine on the newer HBOOTs

Yes you can root without the need to use costum roms:) Weather you have to downgrade or not all depends on your current HBoot version. Hboot 0.80 and below are rootable beyond, IIRC are not. If your Hboot is 0.92 I am sure, or beyond you need to downgrade your HBoot, search modaco for a guide, it´s there how to downgrade Hboot. (can´t recall though if root is required prior to this, I´ve never needed it myself. To check your Hboot shut down your device, hold down power and volume down, that will take you into a special menu where you can read your Hboot version. After that just reboot from there. There are two methods of rooting, paul´s manual root method (you´ll have to check if it can root Android 2.2) Or automatic with unrevoked. Go here to downlaod the tool www.unrevoked.com if they are not up yet you´ll have to ask for an upload of the installer to unrevoked. Can´t give it to you myself right now unfortunately, I´m at school right now and don´t have it handy at the moment. I hope this helped a bit. Kind Regards Asselberghs
