Question about the camera on 2.1

The pictures it takes are too square. i.e. They don't fill the screen when viewed in the gallery. They have a black border down each side (in landscape)

Was it always like this on 1.6?

Is there a way to take a full screen picture?

Yes change the setting to wide-screen. However this has less pixels because its just a 4:3 image thats cropped, as with all phones.
