Guest jayski73 Posted September 21, 2010 Report Posted September 21, 2010 o2's eclair 2.1 was pre rooted from the start? just read article over at endgadget. Its got me thinking that there wont be an official release of froyo for a long time if they cant even get eclair right and have removed the official update from o2's site for a few weeks. The streak is a lovely device that's really being let down, I'm gonna give it a few weeks and see if the top dev's here come up with a nice froyo rom if not then am gonna be looking for a replacement. Dell should stick to desktop pc's/server's and laptops its what there best at! Well i'll stop my little rant and pray to the modaco gods lol peace!
Guest Dogmann55 Posted September 21, 2010 Report Posted September 21, 2010 Hi jayski73, Well my replacement Streak is an unlocked version so is the 00 version running 1.6 build 4399 and although my previous 21 build i was running the MCR 1.6 release i haven't attempted to change mine to a 21 build so as to get Android 2.1 on it as am more than happy with the layout and performance of my Streak as it is. Whilst i was awaiting my Streak issues to be resolved which took a month i bought a Galaxy S in the mean time to use and can honestly say bar the Live Wallpapers that i didn't use i really couldn't see any advantage to 2.1 on the Galaxy over my Streak on 1.6. Now Froyo 2.2 is a different matter altogether as that really will and does bring major improvements but for now I'm happy to wait for it to arrive and stick with my Streak on 1.6 of course I'm disappointed Dell haven't released in September as we thought they would but hope they do release it soon. But even with the just announced HTC Desire HD there isn't a device i would swap my Streak for as IMO nothing comes close to it performance wise even on 1.6 its better than the Galaxy on 2.1. Marc
Guest fards Posted September 21, 2010 Report Posted September 21, 2010 (edited) The reason its rooted is because its a cm engineering build. I'm presuming that was laziness on behalf of who ever was in charge of the auto build system, And didn't change the option in the build setup. Tbh it looks like dell are using qisda/benq to do the main development work, and adding their own launcher and shell to that. someone does have a booted froyo kernel, doesn't do much yet, but its tricky as dell have changed quite a bit in the source and we only have their mishmash donut source (combined of 1.6 2.1, 2.2 and something else) to go on. So unless we get lucky it may take a while to get something functional Ps it was modacos own Paul who noted that it was rooted first, i hope engadget reported that! Edited September 21, 2010 by fards
Guest jayski73 Posted September 21, 2010 Report Posted September 21, 2010 Morning Hi Engadget mobile does say the source came from Modaco ! keep your hair on ! lol This is what was posted: posted Sep 20th 2010 at 5:08PM Ruh roh. Looks like Dell's stepped onto its own toes real hard with the Streak's Android 2.1 update -- O2 just confirmed to us that due to some "feedback from users," it's decided to suspend said download while Dell gets cranking on a revised software release over the next two or three weeks. We weren't given the exact reasons behind this quiet withdrawal, but our friends over at MoDaCo might have had the answer for some time -- soon after the release, they discovered that the 2.1 firmware was in fact pre-rooted, thus leaving the Streak vulnerable to unauthorized access and modification (although handy for the seriously tech-minded). Yikes. On the bright side, such substantial time frame suggests that the upcoming fix should also address other bugs like incompatibility with the desktop suite, weird loading behavior in the browser, and missing WMV video playback functionality. And here comes the inevitable question: what about Froyo? Well, neither Dell nor O2 could provide a date for the Streak's scoop of frozen dessert, but we'll bet you a white iPhone 4 that it won't be out in from endgadget .
