Guest psych0t1c Posted September 21, 2010 Report Posted September 21, 2010 (edited) So, I got my Desire a few days back. Its an O2 branded but not simlocked model with SLCD. It had Android 2.1 on it and I updated to 2.2 with the german O2 downloadable ROM. So of course I do not have root it is still branded. I would now like to go ahead and try custom cooked ROMS, mainly in order to get rid of the branded applications and some other stuff I never ever use.... However, it seems that all the guides on how to install a custom ROM rely having root on the device. Googling around I find that there seem to be no decent ways to root a HTC Desire SLCD version with 2.2 as of now. Aside from that I already have quite a bit of stuff on the phone, namely contacts and appts. I do not want/like to rely on Google Services to back those up (it failed on me before during initial setup, might have been user error though), and also I want a backup of the settings. All the suggested backup solutions also seem to rely on having a rooted phone. So did I maneuver myself into a tight corner now? How can I save settings and existing apps fully so I can easily play around with new ROMs? Or even if I decided to bin the data that is currently on the phone, would there be a way to install a custom ROM without having rooted 2.2 first? What are my option? Is it possible to go back to 2.1 (from an unrooted 2.2) and from there go through the process to get that cersion rooted and THEN finally move on to a custom 2.2 ROM? BTW, are the kitchen cooked ROMs fully localised (german, english, etc.) ? A quick pointer would be much appreciated. Edited September 21, 2010 by psych0t1c

Hey M8:) Okay here goes: Yes your right custom´s require a rooted phone, so to root your phone go here http://unrevoked.com/ install the appropriate version of unrevoked for your phone, remember the HTC Device driver stuff. This is a one click root tool and it works very well, at least it did for me. According to their site it seems they have upgraded and are able to root regardless if it´s Android 2.1 Eclair or 2.2 Froyo. So rooting part should be easy if you use this method. I don´t know if the SLCD is an issue though. In regards to backup yes you´ve got a problem there m8, sorry but you do. I know of 2 backup methods, Titanium Backup and Nandroid both requires root. You can´t backtrack to Eclair if your on Android 2.2 until you root and flash another rom, you could ofc. flash a rooted Eclair if you wanted to, but thats not I take it the reason to go back. Regarding the localization I don´t know to be honest I always use English settings so, and I can´t really recall the setup procedure. I think the only thing you can do is, root your phone, and then do a Nandroid backup from Clockwork Mod Recovery before you try to flash another rom, like MCR for instance. But I don´t know of any way to secure your phone before root sorry.
Guest EddyOS Posted September 21, 2010 Report Posted September 21, 2010 (edited) unrEVOked 3.21 will root your phone with no issues. You can then flash a custom ROM if you want You can roll back to 2.1 if you follow this guide: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=768256 Edited September 21, 2010 by EddyOS
