Guest ThatSnazzyiPhoneGuy Posted September 21, 2010 Report Posted September 21, 2010 (edited) Hi all, I just thought I would let you all know, and update you on my success of using various keyboards. Swype is really cool and intuitive, as well as accurate, but I find the Streak simply too big to find practicality in it. It isn't a thumb based action as I would like, and I find myself tediously drawing on the device in order to spell words (beyond that, the 'tap' method on the Swype keyboard is awful), but we all love the Streak because its huge now don't we? Thusly, I have decided to stick to normal keyboards. The best one [hands down] is available in the Market for just $1.99, and it is called "Better Keyboards". There are a ton of themes you can apply to it if you so choose (HD even for the Streak's big real estate), and it works without falter. The keys are a little bigger, and they have a "smart type" addition that is very similar to the iPhone keyboard wherein you can type a word completely wrong, and the keyboard will correct it for you automatically. As if that weren't enough, there is also integrated voice control, so you can dictate exactly what you want to be printed out right from the keyboard. Pretty neat. It integrates into the settings, and is (if you choose to veer away from the defaults), highly customizable. From auto-cap, to dictation setting, to size, to responsiveness, etc., etc. I have spent about $20 on keyboards that are in the Market, and find that for me, and for the Streak, Better Keyboards is the way to go. You guys tried any that you like a lot? Edited September 21, 2010 by ThatSnazzyiPhoneGuy
Guest jackgt Posted September 21, 2010 Report Posted September 21, 2010 I used SlideIT before moving to 2.1, and I have to say that with the removal of the number pad I like the stock keyboard better than SlideIT. Therefore I haven't tried any others. I leave the suggestions and autofix turned on, btw. Depending on how this thread goes, though, I might be swayed to trying some other options.
Guest gilrad Posted September 21, 2010 Report Posted September 21, 2010 The thing I have been missing most since moving to 2.1 is the speed of the stock keyboard on 1.6 Other keyboards I have tried aren't much better than the stock keyboard, maybe they have a slightly better layout, but they are just as slow or slower. Which keyboards have you guys tried that is fast and responsive?
Guest gingernator Posted September 21, 2010 Report Posted September 21, 2010 Ultra Keyboard seems like it was designed with large screens in mind. It allows you to turn off the fullscreen editor in landscape and has swype like input.
Guest spiderboyy Posted September 22, 2010 Report Posted September 22, 2010 I'm on the O2 2.1 on a US ATT Streak, but I use the Droid X multitouch keyboard. It's quick, and its multitouch, and its free.
Guest ThatSnazzyiPhoneGuy Posted September 22, 2010 Report Posted September 22, 2010 Yeah, that was the thing about Ultra Keyboard. I know that there are a lot of people that use it, and like it, but it is SO laggy I can hardly stand it. It's features are stunning, and layout pretty, but it all boils down to functionality, and Ultra Keyboard lacks that. Better Keyboards is always responsive, and I have only 1-2 times when it actually crashed the app I was running.

Thanks a ton for that recommendation. Im using droid x keyboard now too and suddenly my iphone is finally starting to look less attractive useability-wise.

Had to uninstall it as id changed the language when pissed this weekend and had to deal with stock keyboard for a bit. Its impossible to delete without hitting the L key constantly...
Guest Loconinja Posted September 22, 2010 Report Posted September 22, 2010 I am loving Swype since the last update. To get the most out of it you need to persevere, but it's worth it. I think it works great as a regular "tapping" keyboard too. The one thing I don't like is the way it fills the whole screen in landscape mode.

I know that there are a lot of people that use it, and like it, but it is SO laggy I can hardly stand it. Laggy? Perhaps you don't saw (in the ultra keyboard settings) that you can set the latency between keys touch in ms. If the default setting is too slow for you, you can reduce the time response in order to type quicker.
Guest grumpy_o_g Posted October 2, 2010 Report Posted October 2, 2010 The nice thing about the SlideIT keyboard is that button (a G at the bottom from memory) that shrinks the keyboard to the right slightly, just enough to let you use your right thumb to without letting go of the device itself with your right hand.
