There is a list of developer names in init.rc I assume they work for zte, it's a change history - maybe we can identify some of them on the net (facebook/google etc) and contact them. They wouldn't be able to send us stuff directly but might at lease know the right person to prod.

hmm there is also Donut source for another phone (Link) but the source is for 2.6.29 so maybe this would work for the sf?

It's also got msm7x27 enabled unlike the SF/Blade source.

I have sent a request for our phone, I quoted the p729b model number that it states on the back of the phone, hopefully this will let us get the correct code.

Alternatively they might just tell me to **** off :)

Its more likely that the problem is lack of understanding... you could try contacting the UK phone repair company, if you can get your point across to them, they might bump it back up 2nd/3rd line support...

Or if you know someone Technically competent who speaks Chinese to explain it to them....

From my experience with ZTE I'd say it is definitely a clash of cultures. They probably can't figure out your motives. Just like I can't figure out why they released the code in the first place. Surely they realise that we'd all want to play with it? Apparently, not yet.

As usual with dealing with OEM's they need a poke from the UK retailer.

The Pulse code was forth coming after I contacted top people within T-Mobile and explained the issue that they were not fulfilling their obligation to provide source.

Anyone know the right people at Orange?

Guys, I may be getting somewhere..

After sending a nice polite email to zte regarding source I waited 4 days to receive the stamard 'refer to uk service center ' crap this morning.

not happy about this I then wrote a decidedly unfriendly email back quoting gpl and using such words as

Report.

Violation

Orange UK.

GNU.

Petition.

Etc etc ...

Within an hour I had this a reply that my email had been passed to the appropriate person and they will be in touch ad soon as the information is available.

Interesting to see what happens!

Great thinking, we get someone who sits next to the guy who deals with roms at orange, and then close the thread he's looking at!

Hopefully he will jump to this one and be helpful with the Kernel source.

What we need is the source for the kernel build that is present on the sanfrancisco in the uk, the kernel isn't branded as such, it's the rom that's branded. ZTE failed to release the correct source code, it seems they hoped that releasing just anything would be enough but it doesn't compile with the configuration for the sanfrancisco. NB the sanfran inthe uk is different to the blade in china so it's the uk kernel source we need.

Great, it's unlikely that your collegue will be able to tell us for sure if there will be an update to Android 2.2 Froyo for the sanfrancisco but he should be able to tell us if there definatly wont be. Any info on the likelyhood would be good, since the blade is similar to the sanfran and already has 2.2 it gives us some hope on that front too (of course, if they do release 2.2 then the kernel source for that would be great too!)

The kernel is the core operating system, think of it as a big chunk of code that provides access to the hardware, memory management and so on.

The ROM sits on top and uses the kernel, it's the rom that Orange customises by adding their themes and applications. If the phone was sold by other vendors then the Kernel would probably be common, but the ROM would be tailored by each company from a common start point (vanilla android).

If you ask about the Kernel source he should know what you mean.

There are several, for the N600, Blade, Racer, Sanfrancisco etc etc but if you go into the news item and look at the link for the zip file, they all point to the same zip which is wrong. http://support.zte.com.cn/support/news/New...?newsId=1000304

Maybe we can sweeten them by telling them our improvements to the Kernel and ROM config

Such as the (Pauls) gfx fix so that the Hardware rendering can be enabled, and the suggestion of upping the VM size.

Yes, ask for the UK Sanfransico 2.1 kernel source

The open source declaration can be found in any of those zips, it's in the file COPYING, a small part is quoted below....

"For example, if you distribute copies of such a program, whether

gratis or for a fee, you must give the recipients all the rights that

you have. You must make sure that they, too, receive or can get the

source code. And you must show them these terms so they know their

rights."
