HTC Desire 2.1 - help with debranding please?

Hi folks. Been reading through these threads for a while now and I've reached the point where I've utterly confused myself and just wondered if someone could clarify a few things for me please? :)

First the essential info:

HTC Desire running 2.1 u 1 (Software no. 1.22.61.1)

Branded with Orange (...which I hate with a passion!).

SLCD screen (as far as I can tell).

HBoot 0.83

Radio 4.09.00.08

Hopefully that's enough - if not, let me know what else you need to know.

I want to unbrand my Orange phone and also upgrade to FroYo, but I'm getting more and more confused with what files I need and the process I need to follow. Could anyone be kind enough to lay me out an (idiots....d'oh!) guide? My aim is to have 2.2 running with the stock HTC Sense UI if possible. I can look in to custom UI's at a later date - think the basics will do me for now!

And are there any existing threads that provide a glossary of terms with explanations (i.e. what's an RUU? what exactly does rooting do? etc) that you could point me in the direction of?

I'm fairly technically literate, but this is my first foray in to the world of Android and smartphones and I'm struggling to get my head around it all. I know the easy option is to wait for the Orange branded 2.2 update.....(which is apparently released but lost in the digital ether somewhere.....nice one Orange! :lol: ).....but then I will also fall foul of their insidious branding and bloatware again.

Any help or advice is really appreciated. Mocking and poking with a pointy stick for being the village idiot is optional. :(
