Unbrick?

Hey everybody, I'm relatively new to the forums and to Android. I was interesting in purchasing a Nexus One for Google (as a developer), and root it for the HTC Desire ROM. However, there's all this talk about 'bricking' your phone so apparently it can't be used. If someone was to brick a device, is there anyway to unbrick it? Surely a $529 device couldn't be essentially useless that easy? Thanks for you help in advance, and I apologize if there's a similar topic already.
