Yes, but you can't restore your conctacts and stuff, Nandroids are all or nothing. The backup / restore the system, data and boot partitions AFAIK

Nandroid backs up the WHOLE phone: kernel, data, apps, android, ... To backup just the contacts/txt messages you can use a program like "Titanium Backup" or MyBackup.
