Do I need to edit the boot image to mount a custom partition on boot ?

Hi, I had a stock desire. rooted by unrevoked. Have an ext3 partition on SD. How can I edit init.rc to mount my partition on boot? Is it necessary to mess with the boot image? I can mount the partition AFTER startup, but sense does not recognize the linked apps on the partition.
