Guest trstn Posted September 27, 2010 Report Posted September 27, 2010 (edited) Hi all, just got off the phone to a distraught girlfriend and felt the need to post this reminder: If you get a phone like the Desire you MUST get some kind of phone insurance or cover yourself for loss. The days of buying phones quickly and cheaply sim free are long gone, and the likelyhood of being near an upgrade is over due to 16 or 24 month contracts. I reminded her when she got the handset but she let it slide and it never happened, now her phone's gone and there's no way she can get another, her contract's not up for another 14 months either so she's screwed. The most annoying thing is I was going to root her handset last week but we didn't get it done.... I'd at least have got wavesecure on it and I'm furious with myself for not pushing it more. She works freelance and is on the road a lot, the day after she got the Desire it became the central hub of everything she did - that's why I recommended it for her, it's the heart of her business and now its nicked and we're in the position of wasting money on a cheap handset to cover her until we can get £400+ together to get a new Desire. My only hope is that I'm currently getting 'unable to connect' beeps instead of her voicemail, so I'm really hoping her handset's got a dodgy signal at the moment and the SMS I sent offering a reward gets through to whoever has it, and they're kind hearted enough to return it. Cross your fingers for me Edited September 27, 2010 by trstn
Guest Subject Delta Posted September 27, 2010 Report Posted September 27, 2010 So she misplaced it, or it got stolen? I guess that does suck, and it depends on the person. I have always been ultra careful with my phones, and have never lost one, so I have personally never needed insurance however I can see why people would get it, as phones aren't hard to lose. Sorry to hear about your bad luck, and I sincerely hope you find your phone
Guest trstn Posted September 27, 2010 Report Posted September 27, 2010 (edited) Definitely stolen. Says she put it down, turned away, turned back and it was gone. I've not needed insurance for years but I'd far rather have it. My desire's ok, starting to think I might give her my desire, keep her happy. Edited September 27, 2010 by trstn

Guest Sleepydude Posted September 28, 2010 Report Posted September 28, 2010 Sounds like a perfect excuse to order a Desire HD Yeah, give her your desire, save up and get yourself a HD, boom!
Guest trstn Posted September 28, 2010 Report Posted September 28, 2010 Well, I'm feeling less sympathetic today. Perhaps I'll sell her my desire for £200 as I think she needs a bit of cost to learn to be careful with a high end phone(?) Then I might buy a Desire HD on Friday  Need to look around mind, check that's the best current HTC phone available.

Guest trstn Posted September 28, 2010 Report Posted September 28, 2010 Can't the police find the device through IME with the networks help? I always thought they should be able to, but I've never heard of anything like that happening in the past. I'm guessing once we hit £1,ooo handsets the impetus will be much higher.
Guest bpivk Posted September 28, 2010 Report Posted September 28, 2010 It depends on the country I guess. The police would just laugh in my country if you'd suggest anything like that.
Guest Mr Taylor Posted September 28, 2010 Report Posted September 28, 2010 Dont you have house contents insurance that covers accidental losses? mine does so I dont go for the phone insurance which costs nearly half of my combined house buildings and contents cover? Just a thought!
Guest volatile_ink Posted September 29, 2010 Report Posted September 29, 2010 Did this on my Hero: Created a boot image which had my name and email address and Sim card number on it with instructions to contact any Orange shop to hand the phone in. Set-up an auto-responder to the email saying the phone is lost/stolen and instructions on what to do. Now with S-Off on the Desire, going to do the same again. So each time the phone boots up, you'll see the contact details. Not enough for a thief to do anything with but enough to prove ownership to the police/carriers. Yes, I know its not dev proof, but it's certainly chav proof.
Guest spammyspam Posted September 29, 2010 Report Posted September 29, 2010 I suspect most stolen phones end up out of the country to avoid blacklisting. Good tips for a lost phone, but I suspect if someone wanted to find out the true owner of a phone they could do so with the simcard/IMEI anyway.
Guest Diggedy Posted September 29, 2010 Report Posted September 29, 2010 you could always get her one of those orange san fransiscos for 100 quid, they look pretty sweet and although they arent as fast as the desire I reckon for business ie. calendar and perhaps satnav they will do the job perfectly well
