Guest Jujuuk68 Posted September 28, 2010 Report Posted September 28, 2010 Hi there - nice friendly forum, and it was the reviews here that compelled me to purchase one of these, to replace an LG GT540 that was pickpoketed from me. Now, after 3 days of frankly outrageous customer service from Orange, where like others here they took my £10 top up, it got apparently swallowed in data charges in less than 1/2 hour, and despite being on the Dolphin tarrif, which I confirmed in a call to Orange on charging the phone, they are still to sort out my tarrif. I still have no credit, no ability to connect to the net, or do anything. In this time I have spent over 2 hours on their premium rate helplines, having been (i suspectdeliberately) hung up on twice, promised 3 call backs that never come, and am generally frustrated and angry. So in short, I decided to revert back to Virgin, with whom I was very happy. - I paid for an unlock this evening, and got one within a couple of hours from a recommended site here. Entered it, it works, phone unlocked! Now the issues start. I am frankly, whilst not stupid, not handy with modern technology..... (I have been soldiering on with a nokia 3300 for several years), and now the phone will do nothingbut dial/accept calls. The phone is not one which appears on Virgins support site, and I understand enough having read threads, that I need to enter something called an APN. So I go to wireless & networks, then to Mobile Networks, and then "access point Names". It is blank. So I have tried to create one, based on settings from a website referred to in the "unlocking" thread. But there are far more questions/things to enter than the site I am looking at. I have tried to enter what I can, but it fails to do anything, and if I go back to the Access Point Names, it seems to have remained blank. Nothing appears "saved" there. If anyone is on Virgin, and can lead me through the process, I would be grateful. I also apologise for a first post being a cry for help..... Not always good forum ettiquette.
Guest Simon O Posted September 29, 2010 Report Posted September 29, 2010 (edited) Give these a try: apn carrier="Virgin UK" mcc="234" mnc="30" apn="goto.virginmobile.uk" user="user" server="" password="" mmsc="" type="default" apn carrier="Virgin UK MMS" mcc="234" mnc="30" apn="pp.vodafone.co.uk" user="wap" server="" password="wap" mmsc="http://mms.virginmobile.co.uk:8002" mmsproxy="193.30.166.2" mmsport="8080" type="mms" If they fail then change the mnc value from 30 to 31 and try again. If they fail again, change this to 32. I've checked an apns-conf.xml file from another rom and it seems there are 3 different Virgin UK settings with different mnc numbers. I don't know what this means though. Edited September 29, 2010 by flibblesan

Guest synet Posted September 29, 2010 Report Posted September 29, 2010 (edited) Jujuuk68 - Does yours say T-Mobile now, instead of Virgin? I know Virgin piggy back of them, but it used to say Virgin on my WinMo Touch HD. Fibble - is that correct for mms apn? says vodafone in it? Edited September 29, 2010 by synet
Guest legolamb Posted September 30, 2010 Report Posted September 30, 2010 Mine says T Mobile now rather than virgin, can send sms and data connection using some of the settings above, first Android phone I think it's all working as it should. Thanks for the settings info

I don't know what this means though. Hi, I'm a first time poster, and I really hope you can help me. I've just bought a San Francisco and have unlocked it, but am having trouble being able to send SMS messages with my pay-as-you-go Virgin SIM. I can call and receive calls, and seemingly even receive texts, but I cannot send any texts. I've also tried entering the above APN settings, but that also didn't help. In fact, I was able to add the settings for "Virgin UK" and save them OK, but when I try to add the "Virgin UK MMS" settings they never seemed to save properly. Also, if I tried to edit the "Virgin UK" settings to change the mnc value to 31 or 32 as suggested, and then save the settings, the settings don't save and in fact the "Virgin UK" entry disappears from the phone completely! I should note that this is the first time I've ever had a phone that could even remotely be called "smart", and this is the first time I've ever unlocked a phone, so this is all extremely new to me. On my trawling of the internet for any advice I could find I also found some mentions of something called "SMS Service Centre" numbers, and also the number for Virgin. I found the settings section on the San Francisco where the Service Centre number could be entered, but no matter what number I entered whenever I pressed the Save button nothing seemed to happen... Finally, my service provider is listed as "T-Mobile UK", which I understand might be correct for Virgin, but I must admit doesn't make much sense to me. I can't tell you how grateful I'd be for any help anyone can provide me. It seems like a great little phone, but it has now consumed the lion's share of my Sunday and I'm beginning to get very frustrated. Yours appreciatively, erp. Edited October 3, 2010 by erp
Guest erp Posted October 4, 2010 Report Posted October 4, 2010 Problem solved! I've found out why I couldn't send texts, and it's ridiculously simple: my SIM is simply too old! I've probably had mine for over 8 years. After reading about someone else having similar problems with a very old SIM, who solved it by swapping for a new SIM, I decided to try my girlfriend's Virgin SIM that she bought very recently. And to my delight, everything works fine! The network even appears as "Virgin"! I think a trip to the Virgin store is on the cards for me tomorrow... Yours relieved, erp.

As a complete newbie to android phones this has not all been plain sailing but through hours of toil have got there!!! I have purchased a virgin sim with 1GB data allowance a month but I am struggling to set up the 3G internet usage. I have followed this thread but I am struggling with the APN details I have to insert. The information posted on the settings does not tally up with the data I have to insert into my APN access point. What I see is: Name APN Proxy Port Username Password Server MMSC MMS proxy MMs port MCC MNC Authentication type APN type Could somebody lead me through this as for one i do not understand where to put: apn carrier="Virgin UK" or apn="goto.virginmobile.uk" I assume: user="user" is inserted in username etc. If and when these settings are correct how do you know? Is 3G shown on the screen automatically or is there anything else you have to do Please somebody take pity on me. I am at my wits end!!
Guest Roger49 Posted October 15, 2010 Report Posted October 15, 2010 Virgin customer services could not help with data settings, and told me to speak to Orange, which was obviously a non-starter! Played with the suggested settings, and the following worked for me - I now have 3G! :) Shown without quotation marks as they confuses me. Hope it helps someone else! Name Virgin APN goto.Virginmobile.UK Proxy <Not set> Port <Not set> Username <Not set> Password <Not set> Server <Not set> MMSC <Not set> MMS proxy <Not set> MMs port <Not set> MCC 234 MNC 30 Authentication type None APN type default Ta to Flibblesan.
Guest Posted November 1, 2010 Report Posted November 1, 2010 Hey i was wondering if anyone had the equivalent t mobile settings? thanks
Guest Lew247 Posted November 1, 2010 Report Posted November 1, 2010 (edited) I have purchased a virgin sim with 1GB data allowance a month Have you considered a GiffGaff Sim? it uses the O2 network, but you get totally unlimited internet each month once you top up by £10 or more (plus free calls and texts if you top up more) Edited November 1, 2010 by Lew247
