Upgrading to another rom

Seems like I never got my questions fully answered, maybe listing them this way will help:

-What is nanadroid? does it back up my rom to like a .bin?

-If nanadroid can't do the above, what can backup my entire rom so I can always go back?

-I know I am suppose to use the Acer Download tool to flash a .bin file, but what about all the .zip and the .img files everyone talks about?

-Can I keep my current rom and use a kernal with OC not affecting my personal datas?

-The one thing worries me most next to bricking my liquid is how do I know if the 3G and Phone connection will still work?

I hope someone can help

kernel is in boot.img, your personal data is in data.img. Before trying out a kernel, nandroid back it up and flash a compatible kernel. If you kernel boots up after flashing, you get your phone back with your data intact. If it does not boot up, go to recovery and restore from nandroid.

Nandroid is just a copy process and can't copy everything, while flashing a bin is an installation process. In short, there is no guarantee a nandroid restore will work, after flashing a new bin.

A nandroid is a full backup of your phone. All partitions are copied and can be restored when yu want. So yes you can go back.

A bin files is a full update from Acer, flashing a new ROM (like the OS on a computer), and new baseband (like a BIOS on a computer).

.zip and .img flash only new ROM's, not the baseband.

You can flash an O/C boot without loosing any data. Kernel is independant.

1. nandroid is like system restore in Windows. You can restore all your data and settings, but you cannot restore a nandroid backup that you took on Eclair, on a Froyo ROM

2. In order to be able to go back 100% you need 2 things: 1) the bin file of you current ROM 2) nandroid backup of your current ROM

When you want to go back you flash the bin file - it will restore your OS to factory defualt settings, that you restore the nandroid backup to restore your settings etc.

3. You flash .bin with Acer Download tool. In order to flash ZIP files you need to use Malez Recovery (see the pinned topic for details)

4. Depends what you current ROM is. I would advise you to backup your data using Titanium backup and instal the ROM that is known to be compatible with the kernel you want. However, as many here confirm, OC does not change big thing

5. None of the ROMs(except earli alphas&betas) presented here have problems with Phone or 3G connection. You can flash any ROM and be sure Phone will work and 3G as well if APN is setup properly.

Hope this helps

I am not sure about the data in a way that the frequency of the rogers liquid is slightly different than the european version, i am just worried that the new rom will convert my bands to european bands

You can restore LCR 1.8.2.x from 2.100.07 (Eclair) to 4.503.00 (Froyo) because LCR 1.8.2.x supports both

I have flashed many of these ROMs and never have an issue with losing the radio connectivity. I am in the US on AT&T so similar to you on Rogers Canada. The newest radio A1:05.01.03 I think is actually an improvement. The GSM freq's are always standard. The data freq's for Europe are the issue at 2100MHz which we don't use in North America. Rogers and AT&T use 850MHz/1900MHz as does Telus in Canada. Good luck telling who has 850MHz in their area and who does not, at least for AT&T in the US. The tech support folks can't even tell if you call and ask.

Essentially all of the work here in the Liquid support 900/1900/2100 3G as that is how the phone was manufactured. Other devices have specific NAM 850/1900 radios, like the Xperia X10 and X10a but as far as I know, we are safe here with the Liquids.

Morris Lee,

Thanks for posting the best question on this forum, and getting straight answers.

They should 'Pin' this thread as it will answer a lot of question and avoid people from having to read the whole forum for some simple but important info.

This in-turn will give more newer members the 'warm feeling' and then they will root and try out the new ROM's.

That maybe true, but from froyo 4.5x, after installing LCR 1.8.2.x, you can't go back to stock froyo 4.5x. LCR is the culprit.
