Guest geezer466 Posted October 2, 2010 Report Posted October 2, 2010 Am new to Android although entered the Smartphone scene many years ago with the SPV. After that I was loyal to Symbian which of course is now 'old hat'. The SF is my first foray into the android world. What do the experts in here recommend for the best on-screen keyboard? Predictive text is a must as are larger keys. Anything extra would be a bonus!! I expect to pay a few quid but want the best as I text a lot.
Guest racingclub Posted October 2, 2010 Report Posted October 2, 2010 I'm using (and bought) Swiftkey at the moment: http://www.swiftkey.net/ I really liked TouchPal on the Pulse, but doesnt work quite as well for me on the SanFran (and I really miss the hardware kb on my Dream)
Guest Rem1x Posted October 2, 2010 Report Posted October 2, 2010 (edited) The TouchPal keyboard with 12 key layout. It's perfect for big thumbs, I can type like a beast on it! edit: The SF comes with TouchPal Edited October 2, 2010 by Rem1x

There doesn't seem to be a selector function anywhere I can see.

This will bring up an 'Input method' option where you can switch between the Android and TouchPal keyboards. (thanks to balb0wa) In the TouchPal settings (in Language & keyboard) you can enable switching between the 3 different layouts by horizontally swiping when the keyboard is displayed. Guest harmohn Posted October 2, 2010 Report Posted October 2, 2010 I would recommend installing the HTC_IME.apk along with the clicker.apk for calibration. I find it an essential install on all my devices & Paul was gracious enough to tweak it for us to use on the SF. Search for it here on the forum
Guest David Horvath Posted October 3, 2010 Report Posted October 3, 2010 Does anybody know an advanced keyboard such as swype or swiftkey that supports Hungarian language? I would like to try one of these, but it makes no sense as i'm writing in Hungarian all the time..

Guest csr_cafc Posted October 15, 2010 Report Posted October 15, 2010 Ive had issues with the stock keyboard and touchpal, swiftkey etc but the htc keyboard suits me perfectly defo try it out.
Guest vigadish Posted October 15, 2010 Report Posted October 15, 2010 (edited) My San Fran arrived today. I've managed to change the keyboard to Touchpal but am unable to get any of the different configs i.e. alphanumeric etc. I've swiped as hard as I could but no success. I've only unlocked the phone so far - haven't rooted or anything yet. Am I going mad? Or have Orange been naughty and blocked certain elements of the UI? Edited October 15, 2010 by vigadish

Guest androidswillkillusall Posted October 15, 2010 Report Posted October 15, 2010 i find Vlingo's predictive text quite effective. Plus I dont like how swiftkey learns your typos...unless im using it wrong...
Guest Pakatus Posted October 15, 2010 Report Posted October 15, 2010 swype is my recomendation... since i started using it on pulse...i've never changed. and its perfect for fat fingers....believe me
Guest finnboy Posted October 16, 2010 Report Posted October 16, 2010 swype is my recomendation... since i started using it on pulse...i've never changed. and its perfect for fat fingers....believe me Do you have a link for the current version of Swype, as its not on the Market?
Guest radmannsdorf Posted April 1, 2011 Report Posted April 1, 2011 I can see the settings page for TouchPal but how do I make it the default keyboard? There doesn't seem to be a selector function anywhere I can see. Download "blue icon TouchPal" from market, not the green one. Green one is just dialer. Then go to Settings>Langauge&Keyboard and click TouchPal Input. Go to Messaging and hold down finger in compose window to open Input Method, choose TouchPal input. Done. It's much better than all other keyboards for me, but if it would be a bit larger, just 12buttons, would be even more sexy:)
Guest mickey megabyte Posted April 1, 2011 Report Posted April 1, 2011 thanks for replying to an old thread with a good tip! that looks like a great little keyboard - don't be put off by the chinese - it works perfectly well with english prediction too!

I would have thought someone would have mentioned the Thick Buttons app. As the Android Market description says "A keyboard that predicts the buttons you need and enlarges them. ThickButtons is an on-screen keyboard that makes it easy to type on touchscreens". I had the same problem as you and this works for me. Brian
