I think I bricked my phone

I'm an android newbie who after waiting an eternity for a well-specced phone that I could afford, has gone and screwed it up.

I successfully followed instructions to flash the custom ROM, but after noticing that the battery life had gone way down (the system was running at 100% according to Task Manager), I decide to revert. This is where things went wrong...

Essentially the tar.gz was corrupted and the phone is stuck in the boot sequence with the Orange logo... presumably it started doing its thing and failed and restarts and swapped micro sd cards do not help.

Is it possible to recover my phone from this state? Any help appreciated, thanks.

Don't worry. with the unlocked bootloader and the advent of fastboot its almost impossible to completely brick the phone. The bad news is its a bit of a bitch to restore. what you need to do is install the MCRi bootloader then reboot into fastboot mode and run the fastboot command erase userdata. Then try reinstalling modaco

Presumably this is something different than the Superboot that I originally installed (boot.blade.superboot.mcri.r2.img) and if so, where would I find it?

Thanks

Nope. the MCRi bootloader comes bundled with the superboot. just reinstall that. wipe your userdata using the command provided (For me ./fastboot-linux erase userdata or as a windows user I'm assuming fastboot-windows erase userdata or something along those lines) then follow pauls guide to installl the MoDaCo custom ROM (If it was a software fault then this will fix the issue you where having too)

Thanks Blake for the help so far. If I might test your patience a little further...

I've run the erase command ok and rebooted into the orange logo and no further. I'm hoping that if I have a properly formatted mcri-system.tar.gz on the sd card, it will continue merrily on its way. But without the ability to mount the phone (on my mac), I can't simply copy over the tar.gz to the sdcard. I tried the adb push command, but got 'error: device not found' . Is there something else I need to do to make the sdcard recognisable to adb, or is this a massive undertaking?

Often faced with this issue myself - and of yet have found no way around it. Could try using another mobile ( I use my pulse heh) or a cheap USB adapter. Sorry :-(

You don't need to do the ease actually... can't you just pop the SD out and put it in your PC? Do you have a reader? That is your only option tbh unless you have another device that takes microSD.

Told him to erase as itl probably help fix any software faults (Like when I installed MoDaCo without a erase the system still thought it had all the orange junk installed. I assume its because it had cached them)

Thats a good point actually, after install of MCR in application manager the orange stuff is still in the list installed as 0.00Kb, is there a way to remove this jnk from the list?

Not a major issue but I like things tidy :)

Try Poundland or Tesco. Seriously!

I'm having a similar problem. I've put the renamed file on the SD card and it won't go past the orange logo. I've deleted it and tried putting it on again and still no joy. I'm going out of my mind here, anyone any ideas?

My phone is due to arrive tomorrow and im not sure whether to try rooting the device or try living with the orange bloat...TBH im not very techi and although some are managing to esily root/flash i just av a feeling i will be one to get stuck lol.

can anyone who is getting stuck on the orange logo please fill me in on what browser you are downloading the tar.gz file From? Another thread has suggested that if D/Ldnig the files from "Chrome" Then there is a chance the files would be corrupted. It also alleged that firefox may not be a good idea and reccomended using IE.

Just wondering if anyone can confirm that maybe IE would be the safest method to avoid files getting corrupted

PS...Not saying the above is fact! It was posted earlier and i just wanted to establish if it matters what browser is used

I use Chrome, for all my downloads, works fine for me.

The only issues I have ever heard of regarding browsers is the nightly Chromium builds can sometimes corrupt downloads.

Often when downloading ROMs for my Hero I will use the phone to download it too :)

Update: Fixed.

My card reader arrived in the post today and I immediately wiped the sd card and copied over mcri-system.tar.gz and it reinstalled flawlessly. My phone is back from the dead. Also re-learned that valuable lesson: 'if it ain't broke, don't fix it', well at least until next time...

Thanks to Blake and Paul

In response to the earlier posts about Chrome... it was indeed Chrome that I used to download the file. Although the file appeared completely downloaded, on closer inspection (after I screwed the install) I realised that the filesize was too small. The checksum is there for a reason :)

Hey, I am in a pickle too. I only got as far as installing superboot.

My streak is att, with the 6601 build. I downloaded and ran r2-4399-streak-superboot. When the phone rebooted, it began the Dell Logo Freeze and reboot cycle with the lower two buttons flashing, then restarts again. I have reinstalled superboot 3 times with no luck. I have not gotten passed this. No flashing updates or anything.

Any ideas?

Thanks

You seem to be in the wrong forum, this is for the ZTE-Blade, the Dell Streak forum is here.
