Newbie Questions (Charging/Sims/O2/Data etc)

Completely new to smartphones could anyone comment on the following with an Orange San Francisco?

1. I want to maximise battery life by doing a few full charges - does the phone charge with no sim in it? Can I just plug in provided USB charge without doing anything apart from unpacking and the phone will charge when switched off and give an indication it is charging?

2. I want to use my O2 sim. It is from a very old phone but it is a 3G sim. If the sim is storing any wrong settings regarding WAP can these be put correct?

3. Am I better trying the phone with the Orange sim (after all I have paid £10 call time) and then unlocking and putting in my O2 sim? Will putting in my Orange sim first set things up in the phone memory/sd card that may be wrong for O2?

4. I am sure I have read replies with the O2 APN settings suitable for PAYG. Does anyone have any confirmed ones that work? My main use will be for Web Browsing. I want to try 3G/HSDPA is this what the Web APN is for?

5. Can you do a reset to default on SIM so the SIM goes to default settings in case I have changes any data/wap settings I shouldn't have that may be stored in my O2 sim?

1. Yes it will charge even with no sim in it. The back key on the right should be lit up red if charging.

2. The settings are all on the phone. The only things SIMs store would be the answer phone number, SIM contacts and maybe the SMS message centre. You set up data and MMS etc on the handset.

3. Just unlock right away. Keep the Orange sim for Orange Wednesday texts which are 35p each.

4. The APN is the settings for a data connection. It will connect to whatever is available such as GPRS, Edge, 3G or HSDPA.

5. Not necessary.
