Guest Kaiser Wilhelm II Posted October 6, 2010 Report Posted October 6, 2010 Hmmm, had the SF fully charged at 11am and at just before 3pm it was down to about 25%. Wifi off, BT off, GPS off, .. 3G mode on and 'Syncing' on. Switched on a few times to read email, sent a couple of txts and deleted a couple of others, made a short voice call played a brief video clip in the 4 hour period. Anyone got any ideas what could be causing the phone's battery to drain so fast? I'm pretty sure it's not a 'feature' and hopefully not a hardware fault. The back of the case got pretty warm to the touch so I suspect there was some process running in the background and keeping the cpu etc fully powered even when the phone was in standby mode with the screen powered off. My #1 suspect is the live wallpaper - a Matrix theme. I've replaced it with a static picture to see if it makes any difference.
Guest Cobble Posted October 6, 2010 Report Posted October 6, 2010 Have you installed OSMonitor to see what the rogue process might be?
Guest con500 Posted October 6, 2010 Report Posted October 6, 2010 (edited) Im also seeing rapid battery drain, Iv turned off the live wallpapers, wifi, gps is off. I used the Task manager (in settings) killed all running processes and CPU was running at around 35%. Thing is, im concerned about the phone getting so warm (plain hot while use during charging). Dont know if its normal tho and hoping things improve after a few full battery cycles. This is my first android device and not sure if its normal for the phone to have so many processes running even when the phone is idle...When i use T/M to kill them they are all back again when it comes out of sleep state ;) Still not used Root/Rom as yet so maybe that'l help To be fair i have been messing around with customising getting my homescreens in order. This has no doubt given the battery a fair battering :) Edited October 6, 2010 by con500
Guest fradleyp Posted October 6, 2010 Report Posted October 6, 2010 I noticed this today, this morning I was on about 60% and by dinner time It was flat. wifi, bluetooth etc off using R3
Guest racingclub Posted October 6, 2010 Report Posted October 6, 2010 (edited) I get a decent days usage on r3 (WiFi, Sync, GPS, 3G etc always left enabled). My previous 3 Android phones have had slightly ropey battery indicators as well Edited October 6, 2010 by racingclub

Received my SF on Monday, it wasn't holding much of a charge (50% or so) after a few mins playing it was down to 9%... Tried charging for an hour and it'd only gone upto 14%. Put it on charge Tuesday morning before work (4am) and when I checked when I got home at 1pm it was HOT - almost too hot to touch and the phone wouldn't power on until it had cooled down a bit... Battery was showing 87% at this point, phone crashed & reset a few times (heat related possibly?) and within 25 minutes battery had dropped down to under 10%... (that was with the phone left alone - with nothing running from a cold boot) I called Orange and they seemed to have heard before as they put me straight through to a chap to get a replacement sourced, which arrived this morning. I put it straight on charge, and although this one gets warm, it's NOTHING like the first one - battery level could be seen increasing and within about 45 minutes was almost at 100% (I've been out since so hopefully the house will still be OK when I get back home!!) *** It's worth noting that the flap for the micro SD card was noticeably hotter than the battery pack, so I do suspect that mine WAS faulty... Guest Kaiser Wilhelm II Posted October 6, 2010 Report Posted October 6, 2010 Have you installed OSMonitor to see what the rogue process might be? No, but sounds like the sort of thing I'm looking for. Will install it this evening.
Guest thomas01155 Posted October 6, 2010 Report Posted October 6, 2010 My battery life is great been on since the morning and on 80% played a couple of games, took a few photos and sent some texts. Even did the google skymaps thing for a bit. It seems to have improved after a few days of using the battery up then recharging it.
Guest thomas01155 Posted October 6, 2010 Report Posted October 6, 2010 (edited) OK, my phone won't tell me the real battery level, I don't believe it has that much power left. The battery level doesn't change unless I turn it off and on :/ Oh wait it just did change it seems to drop really fast when I reboot it though. Edit: Its gone up again after reboot. I don't understand this battery. Edited October 6, 2010 by thomas01155
Guest selecta8998 Posted October 6, 2010 Report Posted October 6, 2010 I've noticed that akmd2 is running at 5% constantly - even with orientation switched off. I'm not sure if that's normal or not. My old hero could run forever on vanilla froyo, but the blade seems to have a battery drain of about 10% per hour with wifi off and everything else on. That's on r3 btw - great rom. Wouldn't have got the phone if it wasn't for modaco :)
Guest Kaiser Wilhelm II Posted October 6, 2010 Report Posted October 6, 2010 (edited) OK, charged it up again (it got pretty hot) and then powered it off and restarted when it had fully charged. 2 1/2 hours and down to 84% with same settings as before (3G and sync on, everything else off). Only used it to read a couple of incoming emails with the gmail client. I'm definitely thinking there was some sort of runaway process causing the rapid drop earlier. Guest Skerved Posted October 6, 2010 Report Posted October 6, 2010 Just to add from my experiences. I've had the phone a few days now and I still play a lot with settings, installing apps and so on. Right now I have 45% left after about 12 hours of use. From the feeling I have I'd say it's better then my Nexus One. :)
Guest Kaiser Wilhelm II Posted October 6, 2010 Report Posted October 6, 2010 4 hrs 18 min uptime and 79% battery remaining - the last time it ran down to <25% in just under 4 hrs. Time to start hunting the rogue app. I guess that's one drawback of an open platform where it's easy for anyone to knock out an app with few restrictions.
Guest cmberry20 Posted October 6, 2010 Report Posted October 6, 2010 Charged my phone at work & unplugged it around 3pm. Its now nearly 10pm & i'm showing 61%. In that time i've made a couple of calls. Played Angry Birds for 1/2 hour. Browsed the internet for 1/2 hour (wifi). Played with some apps & generally messed around. I was worried that the battery was being used too quickly, but this seems normal now!

I'm gonna give it a few days but I have just given it its first charge and it went down from 100% to 85% in about 15 mins which is a little worrying. No wireless, internet, GPS, just a few mins adj some settings. I was wary when I saw the smaller battery compared to my Pulse. So if this is a sign of things to come, my trusty Pulse will back out

Wish i could say the same, I think im noticing the quick decrease since i downloaded 'Handcent SMS' went into the app for no more than 5 minutes tweaked a few settings (didnt send any messages) My battery shifted from 88% to 72% Though even when phone is idle it still drains realy quick IMO 16% in 5 minutes seems exessive. Theres a battery hogg runnin loose somewhere :)
Guest crazyfool_1 Posted October 6, 2010 Report Posted October 6, 2010 I charged it for the first time yesterday. This evening it was at 85% having been in sleep since the previous night so about 18 hours. However I have been playing around with it for maybe 1 1/2 hours, changing settings, installing/uninstalling apps and it has dropped to 62%. Does this sound right?
Guest mastakila Posted October 7, 2010 Report Posted October 7, 2010 boor battery life here as well :/ fully charged it can be drained in one day (10-15min phone calls, 10-15 texts, 0.5h of wifi web browsing, 1h of general messing with the phone as I had it for only 4 days) but what's most annoying is the time it takes to charge it up again, so far I had to charge my phone 3 times and it took form 4 to 6h!!! I am really disappointed with battery life and time it takes to charge it, I was hoping to get away form daily charge switching form my iphone3g but the advantage of iphone was that it only took 1.5h to get it fully charged. I am using r2 custom ROM and I really hope this can be fixed with next ROM release...
Guest cmberry20 Posted October 7, 2010 Report Posted October 7, 2010 Quick update - Been 11 hours since i last posted. At which time the phone was at 61%. Since then, i've been to bed, phone has remained switched on in sleep mode. Alarm on phone has gone off. Made one phone call (2 mins) & played Angry birds for 5 mins. Battery is now at 48% So thats a 13% drop in 13 hours. Not bad!! I'm using a app call Juice Defender & that seems to help, especially when the phone is in sleep mode.
Guest fradleyp Posted October 7, 2010 Report Posted October 7, 2010 mine has been much better today. Charged it up last night and when I got home today I still hade 50% left.
Guest deweylewie Posted October 10, 2010 Report Posted October 10, 2010 Charged mine to 100% and after 12 hours of being on standby it's at 45%! All comms were turned off and it's running stock rom.
Guest Andysan Posted October 10, 2010 Report Posted October 10, 2010 I've got all services on with the exception of WiFi. With an hour or so of browsing yesterday (3G) and about an hour of listening to music (headphones, full volume), the odd call/text/email and sync on it lasted me over 24 hours until it had about 20% left and I put it on charge. No live wallpapers, stock ROM, brightness on full.
Guest matt_not_andrew Posted October 12, 2010 Report Posted October 12, 2010 (edited) I'm having similar battery problems on my SF. I usually have to charge it up about 6hours into the day when it gets to about 35%. I do find that:WIFI is the main killerGPS likewisephone calls and sms don't seem to affect the battery life too muchmobile data connections take their toll on the battery but not like WIFI - still eats into it faster than my previous phonesbluetooth audio to my car or motorbike helmet uses it up fastplaying games is a battery killer tooSo basically if I use my phone as a phone (call and sms) the battery will easily last the day. If I play games, download through mobile data, listen to music through bluetooth or headphones it drains far faster than I would have liked. If I use WIFI or GPS then I can almost watch the battery count down in real time. Today I had it fully charged at 07:30. I only used the phone while walking the dog for 45 minutes where I had some music playing through my headphones and browsing facebook and a few forums using a GPRS connection. I made a 2 minute phone call using the headset. The screen was set to auto and all other connections were off. I ran task killer briefly to check no other apps were running. I got home at 09:20 and the battery is down to 71% Now I actually think this is almost reasonable because over summer I was using my Nokia N86 for bluetooth music and a few calls while on holiday on my motorbike and I was getting about 6 hours out of it. Smaller screen and it has a battery saver mode which definately helped. The thing is I can use wifi on my N86 for 3 hours surfing and the battery will still be at half way. i would prefer a better battery life but can anyone tell me it this is reasonable or if there is something I can do to eak more out of the phone? FYI my phone before the N86 was a HTC Touch HD which I think has better battery life than the SF but then it had a slightly bigger battery. UPDATE - I just connected to TVCATCHUP via wifi for about 5 minutes and the battery dropped from 71% to 64%. Edited October 12, 2010 by matt_not_andrew
Guest deweylewie Posted October 12, 2010 Report Posted October 12, 2010 I tried not using a task killer yesterday and 9 hours of standby later the battery was dead (from about 60%). I'm looking at my processes on osmonitor and it has: /system/bin/akmd2 on 5% constantly. I understand this is the compass or accelerometers? Android system sits at 1-5% for about 10 secs then jumps to 15% for 1 sec and back down again Analogue Clock 1-8% Orange home screen sits at 0 and jumps to around 7% every 5 secs, then back down
Guest Eclogue Posted October 12, 2010 Report Posted October 12, 2010 My battery life has been improving, perhaps as the battery improves & I learn about android. The stats say it's been unplugged for 18 hours, used for about 3, and the battery is at 35%. It gets me through a day of FM radio, plus robo defense & wifi browsing for a few hours. The things I've done - Used System Monitor ( logs CPU, battery and device uage over time and top apps, CPU speed, pie charts etc., It also lists total CPU by each app. helpful if you have something kicking in now and again that sucks battery)Checked settings/about phone/battery use for an overview.Put screen on auto brightnessI use LauncherPro, I don't use the orange home screenI use tasker to put it in airplane mode overnight & auto turn off wifi/gps when not required.
