Anyone else finding thier SF a little 'jerky' in it's operation?

I've had my SF for just under a week now and am loving it (for the price), it's a very functional piece of kit, one thing though that is bugging me is I'm finding the whole system kind of stutters, it's certainly not smooth in it's operation, even scrolling a simple settings menu stutters, I'm using the original ROM with launcherPro, I've tried it with just the vanilla home screen but still the same, it's like there is something in the background taking up too much resources but I checked with OSMonitor and nothing really stood out, games for example are never completely smooth, they are jittery in places.

Am I expecting too much from this phone?

Truth is this my first Android phone smart phone and from looking at other android phones in operation via youtube none of them seem to be completely smooth, but surely a simple settings menu should be?

Android generally suffers from some jerkyness. The woes of a interpreted runtime. However if you use Pauls ROM r3 he enables hardware acceleration on the user interface which speeds up things like menu scrolling (By taking all the drawing load off of the CPU and onto the GPU) though this may have a slightly negative effect on some of your hardware accelerated games (by few FPS, nothing to worry about).

Its also possible that you have installed a application like a badly made chat client that polls in the background which can increase the load on your CPU and may start itself even if you do not explicitly start it.

It's not as smooth in use as even my ageing iPhone 3G but I put that down to all the bells and whistles.

However, I'll take the increased flexibility and usability of Android over Apples slick but 'walled garden' approach any day.

This jerkiness was the one thing that bothered me about the phone. At first i thought it was just because of the slower processor but i have read that even more expensive models suffer with it. I have seen some comments that the 2.2 update helps a lot to make it smoother in operation.

I guess JIT will help a lot. That is something I found with Android a lot in the past, causing Bluetooth audio to be jerky and awful.

It's much better when using the modaco custom rom.

Try turning off the animations or changing them from normal to fast.

That's just for window transitions though, isn't it?

The jerkiness i'm experiencing is with general scrolling in all apps. It seems to stutter/lag constantly like it can't keep up with the scrolling speed. The browser app is particularly jerky.

I'm not experiencing any jerkiness - it's smooth scrolling for me :)

I found mine starting to run incredibly sluggish after my first couple of days use but then I flashed paul's r3 rom and have had no problems since

I found it ok (on r2, will update to r3 when I get 5 minutes).

That said I had a play on a friends nexus one one 2.2 earlier this week and it's obviously much smoother.

Compared to an iPhone, scrolling is nowhere near as smooth. It is jerky in comparison. Other than that it is an incredible device for the money.

Well, the screen does have more than twice as many pixels as the iPhone*, so that is perhaps understandable.

Believe me, after moving across from a sluggish Touch HD, the difference is like night and day. The speed of the interface has surpassed my expectations by a long, long way.

(*not the iPhone 4, obviously)

I also found it very jerky with the r3 rom. I went to the stock ROM and its much better. im just installing all the apps now and ill let you know how i get on.

I can confirm the phone is definetly running much faster on the stock ROM. I baked the stock rom without the orange junk and im using launcher pro. Its much much smoother than the R3 rom.

Im going to use it and let you know how it goes.

How can it be faster even without HW-accel?

And it's not as jerky as in Paul's unboxing video at youtube? Because that's just too jerky.

In his video, the review was with the stock original rom.

There have been many threads that people who have upgraded from R2 to R3 have found it more jerky.

Ok.. Well.. How can you want a phone that jerks like that? I don't get this, I was so sure that I wanted to buy one.

what worked for me is a 'workaround' another member (sorry can't remembre handle at the moment) suggested. As soon as it reboot I go open 'Camera', press 'Menu' and then just close the app again. This immediately takes my CPU useage down from the higs 90s to a respectable 20-30percent. I've tried it on many reboots now and it works for me everytime. I know its not a solution as such, but its not a too lengthy workaround unless you reboot often.

Would be interested to know if it helps other people on here.

there is an app called autostarts that can stop phone apps from starting on bootup.

Having just had another play with an iPhone4 is very noticeable that the SF has a much less granular scrolling movement. It's like it uses less frames per second when scrolling. Does that make sense? If you scroll the display just a few millimeters in any direction you can see that it is a little jumpy like it is refreshing the display less often. Is this an SF trait or generic Android?

My Hero G2 was more jerky than this turkey so unsure why yours is jerkey. I do see ROMs all over with crap in them still!
